Tried to check in the dictionary (no help there) and discovered that an "ani" is a bird.

Anuses is preferred in English.
There are several "anus" words in Latin. The most common is short-a anus, accent on the nus, meaning an old woman; and the root of our word, stress on the long a, which interestingly can mean the whole ass and not just the hole. In fact the word means any kind of ring, and is used euphemistically. Vagina, on the other hand, started as a very crude joke; in common use it meant the sheath of a sword.
Ah, what a sentence... "Anuses is preferred in English"
