13. Ya know....
In the time it takes you to type:

"turn on msnbc now - they are announcing it even as i type"

You could have ANSWERED THE QUESTION AND EXPLAINED WHO THE FUCK BTK WAS.

Sorry for getting annoyed, but I really hate non-answers...

23. That's not what we were asking
Not everyone (and it looks like only a few) know what BTK means. THAT'S WHAT THE QUESTION WAS.

24. Unfortunately - no details
they want to keep the case pristine as possible - only called a 30 min news conference to announce they have arrested a suspect - no name was given. how strange. this guy (assuming it's a man) had killed 8 people in the wichita area beginning in 1977. 59 year old former student from wichita state university who had taken some kind of law enforcement classes. had taunted the police via the media before and last year began again sending clues to the newspapers.

We didn't understand what BTK means. We do now, but telling us to "turn on MSNBC RIGHT NOW" is a total non-answer...

36. i apologize for that
i'm formally from the wichita area and this news interests me since i have family members who have been living in terror since the beginning of these killings. i thought most people knew the info on the BTK since he had resurfaced in the past year sending clues to the police. it has been in the news - but since i have close ties to that area, i suspect that i am more sensitive and inquisitive about this case.

Telling us to turn on the TV, etc, wasn't at all helpful. I was just curious what BTK was/meant. Sorry if I sounded extra annoyed... :-)

my efforts in saying 'turn on the tv' was totally my excitement in watching the ongoing breaking news conference regarding this creep.

40. that's strange - i always envisioned college students with tv's in their
dorm rooms. the BTK is a serial killer in wichita who has been on the loose for 28 years. hopefully the person they have in custody is the right one. he has been taunting the police - much like the zodiac killer - and now seems to be in custody. we shall see. dennis rader is the suspect's name - in some kind of law enforcement or security - don't know - saw some old footage of him in some kind of uniform.

Bind
Torture
Kill

He signed letters to the police as BTK. He had disappeared for years, but recently returned.

Edit - Kansas itself, not Kansas City.

25. One thing bothers me...
Isn't this guy innocent until judged guilty?

It *probably* is the guy, with forensics, etc.
But there is something disturbing about them coming up and announcing this like he has already been judged guilty.

Just my 0.02.

31. Well, it probably is
and he may have confessed, but still, we seem to be trying cases on TV now all the time. Like Scott Peterson-he probably did it, but when they arrested him, there was a lynch mob outside the building calling for his death before he was formally charged or acquitted.

34. i think the reason for all of this press and hoopla is for the people
living in the wichita area who have been terrorized by the BTK serial killer. i'm from that area and remember my family members being terrified at the peak of these killings. hopefully this will give them some kind of 'peace of mind' and those family members of the victims some kind of answers. will have to wait and see how this plays out.

35. No he is not considered innocent until proven guilty
"Innocent until proven guilty" is a legal term of art for how the judge and jury must consider the defendant in a criminal case. The state is entitled to make decisions of guilt or innocence and attempt to prove it through a trial.

The police and prosecuters must think that the guy is guilty, or else they would be bringing a case in bad faith (ie I have not made up my mind if this guy did it, but I think I can convict him, so might as well try this guy).

We are not on the jury. We can make up our own minds about guilt or innocence. People have no benefit of presumption of innocence in interpersonal discourse.
