That's one great funking track, even for the Beatles.

On edit: came back to fix "funking," but I like it.

1. Lennon later called it "a horror"
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 05:03 PM by jpgray
I think he was being too hard on himself, though. It beats the shit out of "Yellow Submarine," anyway. His best on that album was "I'm Only Sleeping" by far, though.

2. Artist go through stages like that.
Bowie talked about hating his early stuff for a while, now he thinks it's good.

18. One of my......
.... all-time favorite artists, Cocteau Twins, did an album in 1984 called Treasure.

They have relentlessly dissed it in interviews, calling it an "abortion" and such. It is the only album they ever did that charted (I think, a way later one might have) in the UK at 28.

Turns out that they used an outside producer on that one album. They hated working with the guy. But as a fan, I can tell you for sure that Treasure is not their best work but it most certainly is not their worst. :)

Artists are not always able to be objective about the merits of their work. :)

9. In that same inteview,
Lennon also shat on Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road. He was just bitter about the Beatles is all - I think that was like in '70 or '71, so the hate was still pretty fresh. Also, Harrison blew him completely out of the water on that tune.

"I'm Only Sleeping" over "She Said, She Said," eh? Yeah, actually there might be a point worth discussing there.

Not original, but it gave credit to a great song.

10. Try to find a live recording of Mike Keneally playing it...
Both guitar parts played perfectly by one person. Amazing.

12. Not to brag, but I'm gonna brag
When I'm in practice, I can do it. I love to do double-stops, I think they're extremely cool and useful.

But I'm not at all surprised that Keneally does it; he's amazing.

There's a story about Joe Walsh, that when he was first learning to play, this was one of his favorite (and hardest) practice pieces. He assumed that that was how George had played it; it wasn't until he'd been in a recording studio himself (with the James Gang) that it occurred to him that George had overdubbed the harmony part.

13. Awesome song
Just figured I'd give this thread a kick 'cause I love that song. It's one of my favorite all-time Beatles songs. It always bothered me how much John dogged his own song in the case of that one. George's guitar work on it is insane. I also love the screw-up version on Anthology 2 where John, and especially Paul, both have gotten the giggles about something and can't contain themselves through the whole take. It's really fun to listen to.

14. Kick for one of the best Beatles songs EVER.
And a slow, gooey death to C(r)apitol Records for butchering Beatles albums the way they did for release Over Here!

15. Holding out for the next Capitol release of the Albums as a CD box set
'cause I want Rubber Soul, Yesterday and Today, and Abbey Road as I remember them! Not the UK versions, thank you very much.

What the hell is KEEPING them, anyway???

20. The vinyl, used, is fairly plentiful.
I just picked up a stereo copy of "Rubber Soul" for $2, in perfect condition. The mono version was available, too! So for less than $10 you could have all those albums again.

BTW- Abbey Road? I was pretty sure Capitol stopped altering the US releases starting with Sgt. Pepper.

17. I agree..
... it is my favorite song on that album. That guitar is just like nothing else being done at the time as far as I can tell.

The vocals are a bit strained at times, but that only adds to its charm.
