What food substitutions have worked for you - the odder the better... |
|
I got a great tip from a fellow DUer at least a year ago. He said he was out of jelly for his PB&J one day, so he tried PB&Mayo. Ever since I read that post, Mayo is the only thing that rubs elbows with my PB. It's great!
Then this morning I found myself out of butter. Also no margarine or oil. So what did I find to scramble my eggs in? Pepperoni. I heated a couple slices in the pan and slid them around. Worked great.
Any experiences from anyone else?

That one's real common though. I pretty much use it all the time now.

2. Not really a substitution, |
|
I have put peanut butter and mayo on a hamburger. There is this stand another town over that does that and everyone raves about the food.

3. Want popcorn, and you're out of oil? |
|
Use butter flavored Crisco instead.. It makes popcorn taste just like the theater. I never use vegetable oil any more.
Oh, I'm talking about real stove-top popcorn, not that microwave junk.

4. Cook any kind of rice in any kind of broth. |
|
And throw any kind of veggies in you have, fresh, frozen or canned.
Both these work well in pre-packaged things like Rice-A-Roni, too.
As for peanut butter... the only thing I eat on PB sandwiches are sweet pickles! Granny Smith apples dipped in PB is good, too.

6. If you're trying to stay away from starchy potatoes |
|
Cauliflower mashed with some butter tastes just like mashed potatoes. I didn't believe it either, but it really does.

8. Unsweetened applesauce |
|
for oil in recipes such as cakes.
Works great! Much less fattening and won't clog your arteries.

12. That Is About Correct |
|
I sincerely am nauseated by even the smell of mayo.
The weird thing is...I like all the ingredients of mayo. But I hate mayo.
I mean, I like eggs, I like lemon juice, I like vinegar...what else is in mayo, anyway?? Oil is fine with me...I dunno, but I really cannot stand mayo.
Spread a little salmonella...:puke:

15. I Don't Like Miracle Whip, Either |
|
that makes me gag, too.
I'm sincere. I'm not THAT much of a picky eater, not like when I was a kid...but Mayo and any "salad dressing" makes me puke!!
Sada dressing my ass!! Get me some oil and vinegar! THAT is salad dressing. Get me some good Wish Bone Italian...THAT is salad dressing.
Anyone ever actually USE mayonnaise as salad dressing? I didn't think so.
God, mayo, in any form...or anything closely resembling mayo...makes me puke.

17. Add yellow mustard to that sandwich! |
|
Also different -and good- is catsup and relish with crunchy peanut butter. My daughter loves egg and cheese w/cream cheese on a plain toasted bagel...

Dehydrated American cheese tastses and has similiar texture to crackers. It has more calories in it than a similiar sized cracker, but a woman at work on the Adkins diet said that she eats cheese "crackers".
