Saw Sideways over the weekend - opinions?
I finally got around to seeing it. I liked it a lot. Paul Giamatti is awesome and the wine expert details were fascinating. It was odd though, there were folks in the theater who laughed hysterically at every line, even the ones that were kind of sad. Oenophile humor, maybe? Or has it become a cult film of sorts? Perhaps they were just under the influence of something.

1. I loved it
But that's just me. I'm weird. I thought the characters were brilliantly acted.

2. I thought it was good
Best movie out this year, but that doesn't say much since there are so many bad movies this year.

I would say Sideways and Spongebob were the only good movies released this year.

3. what about Garden State, Spider-Man 2, and Eternal Sunshine?
I agree it was a sub-par year, but there WERE some good films out there.

5. Garden State was OK
Sayles did much better with Lone Star and Sunshine State IMHO, and Spider man 2 just seemed like matinee schlock.

Eternal Sunshine was good, but the hype kinda ruined it for me. It was kind of a letdown, being as I've read a lot of Phillip K Dick, and this seems like it was stolen from a few of his plots.

4. Glad you asked that
I live in Napa Valley and the movie was highly recommended to me... as hilarious.

I loved it. There were some funny lines in it, but hilarious, no. I thought it was a very sweet, sad movie about a couple ordinary guys just trying to get their life together as we all are. I hope it gets some awards. It's a good solid movie, script, acting everything.

6. Exactly. That's what appealed to me
I'm a 30 something trying to get my life somewhere - I felt I identified with all four characters at some point.

11. Read the book.
The movie does some things better with the story, the book covers a lot of territory that the movie doesn't even cover.

12. Worth seeing, but not Oscar worthy
in my opinion. I did like it a lot -- but it doesn't belong in the company of Million Dollar Baby, for example.

14. I liked it but didn't love it.
That said, Paul Giamatti never disappoints me. He's right up there with William Macy on my list of massively under-appreciated actors.
