~~~LIVE MIDATLANTIC BLIZZARD THREAD~~~Part 1: The Nor'Easter Approaches
Current conditions in the nation's capitol:
calm winds from the south, 30 degrees.
Forecast:
At around 1 AM winds will shift to the northeast. One inch on the ground by morning rush hour, up to a foot by Monday night. Northeast winds expected at 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
I just got back from the store: 45 minute wait in the express checkout lane. Bread, toilet paper, and milk are not to be found anywhere within 35 miles of Washington, DC. The usual state of panic has set in. DC government has already declared a state of emergency starting at 9:30 AM. Metro warned us again that they stay underground when 8 inches hits the ground. Not a single official cancellation has yet to be declared.
Will Washingtonians be forced to confront their most dreaded nightmare: a day without work???
13. That wasn't a big snow dumper, was it?
I'm talking about the one that hit the second weekend in March, 1993 - that one dumped 3 feet of snow overnight. That was a doozy!
and 3 cats that loved to tease him... I always have a well stocked pantry so we were OK. But it took me days to dig my long driveway out so I could move my car. I didn't think about snow-removal when I rented the bungalow.
I carved a path out the back door for her, but she thought she'd venture out further and got stuck. From a sea of white, I heard this tense little bark - she made it about 2 feet off the cleared path - her little black nose was all that was visible...:)
Well, one woman at least. I was working all day yesterday and today and hadn't heard the forecast. I was surprised to see the Giant and WFM so packed. I saw the empty shelves and knew immediately what was up.
Whoever makes the federal government shutdown decision is a real prick. Has been ever since Clinton left. They'll probably wait until everyone gets to work and sends everyone home at the same time.
God save us all.
I was hoping the snow season was over, too. See my snow shovel busted after the last storm and now its holding together with duct tape and bailing wire. I didn't want to have to use it again.
24. Man, that sucks about your shovel!
Yeah, make the best, I know. I really do enjoy winter up until about now. If it was guaranteed to only last until, say, Feb. 20, I would love every minute of it. :P
The thing I don't like is really my own fault, so I can't complain. And that is the fact that I commute about 30 miles each way to work right now and the drive sucks. I don't have the kind of job I can skip for bad weather though.
Well, I wish you luck with your shovel! If you lived in my neighborhood, I'd lend you mine!
16. I have tapes of the Blizzard of '96 from DC
It is fun to watch from time to time now that I live in the south.
Okay, I confess....at least up there I never, ever lost power.
Down here, every single friggin ice storm causes the power lines to snap or tree branches to hit them and I lose power.
Hurricanes = tree branches = same result.
So, I am not so smug.
18. Bad News Here in Philly Too
Winter storm warning in effect for Monday and Monday night.
The NWS in mount holly, new jersey has continued a winter storm warning for Monday and Monday night for portions of central and southern new jersey, extreme southeastern pennsylvania, northern and central delaware, and northeastern maryland.
Snow will begin from south to north during the morning hours on monday as an intensifying area of low pressure approaches the region. Most areas should not see accumulating snow by 9 am, except for caroline, talbot and queen anne''s county which could see snow begin during the morning commute.
There is still some uncertainty as to the exact track of the low as it moves by. A difference of position by as little as 30 to 50 miles can have a big influence on what type of precipitation falls and where.
At this time, it appears as if the precipitation will begin as snow across the region. The snow will likely mix with some sleet during the afternoon hours. A total of 5 to 10 inches of snow is expected over the area, lesser amounts, generally in the 3 to 5 inch range are expected along coastal sections of ocean and atlantic counties.
Travel conditions will quickly deteriorate during the day on Monday and become treacherous by afternoon, and it is best to avoid all travel, unless absolutely necessary. Roads surfaces will become slippery and visibilities will be reduced in areas of heavy snow and sleet. If you must travel, slow down and allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
Stay tuned to noaa weather radio or your local media for the latest information on this winter storm.
26. You gotta be kidding me
5-10 inches... Sorry I shouldn't have pooh-poohed this but it brings back so many memories. I was born and raised in Trenton, NJ till the age of 12. Down there 10 inches was alot of snow and of course we loved it... Got out of school for a day or two, played w/our snow coasters and yankee clipper sled once the snow was packed enough.
Up here though it takes quite a bit for the schools to be shut down. And even if they do, it's ONLY the schools..you have to be at work on time no matter what! Even if there is 23 inches of snow on your road because it hadn't been plowed yet.
Oh and the cold...I remember in NJ the school shut down because it was considered to be too cold for anyone to be out. It was ABOVE 0!!!! Not that I minded at the time, but it cracks me up when I think of it now. I live by an elementary school and see kids playing outside at 25 below...bundled up of course.
I guess there was no real point to this but that weather forcast made me wamnt to reminesce. One of my sisters still lives in Trenton. I bet her boys will have some fun tomorrow! :-)
