54. That's not trashing, that's stating an opinion, |
|
which everyone has the right to do. I happen to totally agree, and I think he was the completely wrong choice for the host. He's always annoyed the hell out of me, and he did so again last night. That was, frankly, the most boring Oscar show I've EVER seen and I've been watching them religiously for 27 years now, since I was 13 years old. They didn't even show highlights of the five nominated films like they do every year in the interest of "moving things along." They're so concerned with that that they've actually hurt the show.
But Rock sucked, and was nowhere near Crystal or Martin or most of the other hosts. The only one that sucked worse in recent years was David Letterman, who was HORRIBLE. I stil cringe when I think of his hosting stint and that was ten years ago. I never did get his stupid, idiotic "Uma, Oprah" schtick, and neither did a lot of others. But Rock was boring and annoying and way out of his element. Of course, I've NEVER thought he was the least bit funny.

The Oscars is just such a strange, stilted, formal format that it is hard for an edgier performer to carry it. Look who have been the most successful-- Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Billy Crystal... Not the Chris Rocks, Whoopi Goldmans and Dave Lettermans.
I guess there is just something about "old Hollywood" and the traditions, the tuxedos, etc., that just make for a major disconnect when you bring out a younger, hipper comedic host.
But, I don't criticize Chris Rock for that.

37. exactly what i was thinking, Rock would have to tone down from his usual |
|
performances. the same goes for Letterman which is why he was so off compared to his regular shows.
i actually think it would be good to give Rock another chance. with time he might be able to come up with something that is just funny and close to what he does in his regular shows but still acceptable enough for the Oscars.
the visit to the Magic Johnson theater was very different and funny i thought. more of something different like that.

and I'm sick and tired of people saying that some people just like to argue for argument's sake. I think you need to reconsider your position and grow up. Maybe even see a therapist. Perhaps better yet, examine your soul.
People arguing just for the fun of it - what a dumbass statement and stupid thing to say.

It's up to you to decide to stop making outrageous, silly claims, and stop arguing - which you do incessantly. I am not an imposter, and I am appalled and offended that you would imply such a thing. Neither I, nor anyone else, get into arguments for the sake of arguments, which was your first fallacious claim. Add in the lack of a comma in your penultimate sentence, and I can only conclude that you are a simpering dumbass with nothing to day, like your original statement that people engage in arguments for "fun" and "without need". Screw that. I bet you still live with your mother and she rocks you to sleep at night, doesn't she?
I totally disagree with you, and I don't know why you feel the need to argue about whether people argue for fun. No one does, and it's time that you stopped it.

Let's face it, the Oscars are a stuffy "whitebread" affair, it was disingenuous to try to give it youth "street cred" by letting Chris Rock host. Chris Rock would be great for the MTV awards, but I don't think it worked for the Oscars.
He lost me when he did that segment where he was interviewing people on the street to see what movies they had seen. They all said "White Chicks" and "Chronicles of Riddick" etc. Rock's point was that "real people" don't watch these movies. I thought it was a slap at the audience with a message like "you people out there are all a bunch of phony pretentious m-f's."
Well I watch these movies, and I will never see "White Chicks." I'd like a host who could at least relate to the viewing audience on some level.

before he even started and he finally told them to get their asses in their seats!
I thought there was a lot of dry humor with Chris, too..things that maybe went "swoosh" over people's heads at the moment.
One thing he said, too, that I liked .."There's been 10 Oscars given out and no one has been tested positive for steriods yet."
Guess who I thought of when he said that?
Chris looked Marvelous and he had such healthy energy about him..I looked forward to seeing him everytime he came back.
He had the audience in stitches when he was comparing bush's job to someone who had a job at the Gap.
And he gave a great plug for Michael Moore and F9/11.
I agree with whomever said..he should come back and do it again..now that he has his feet wet!

I thought he absolutely ruled. Funny, irreverant, fresh.
It's like he said on Oprah today: He was "working for somebody." (ABC, The Academy). It's not like when he works for himself on his HBO shows, and he can do whatever he wants. This time he had to walk a thin line. I thought he walked that thin line very well.
Oprah said that last night's show got the highest ratings in 5 years. I'd love to see him do it again.

62. Was the movie theater bit a revisit to "black folks vs. n*****s?" |
|
I couldn't quite figure out if he was trying to embarass the people in the lobby by intentionally showing them off as low-class, no-taste dim-bulbs. I know he caused a HUGE uproar the first time he did a routine around "black folks vs. n*****s," and wondered if he was intentionally showcasing these guys on purpose. (Then again, maybe he was satirizing the Oscar's highbrow-ness this year with the nominees?)
I would've liked a companion bit at a mall in Boise or suburban Ohio, to see what other folks would've said, and get more perspective on perhaps what Rock was really trying to do. (Albert Brooks was droll, but also not really indicative of middle-American tastes, y'know?)
