Snow moved rapidly into Southern New England and Upstate New York on Monday evening. Parts of eastern New York, northeast Pennsylvania and interior sections of New England can expect six to twelve inches of snow. Snow on Cape Cod and extreme southweast Massachusetts will change to rain overnight. Snow will end or change to freezing drizzle in the Baltimore-Washington area, overnight, after a modest snow accumulation. Snow will wind down before morning around Philadelphia and New York City after a six to ten inch accumulation. Parts of the Boston area may see upwards of a foot of snow by Tuesday morning. Heavier amounts of snow will fall in Maine late Monday night and Tuesday.

4. Today's Forecast Summary
Wintry weather settling into Northeast, Midwest
1:19 P.M. ET 2/28/2005
Sr. Meteorologist, The Weather Channel
National Forecast Video

Northeast
Blustery, snowy, chilly conditions will grip most of the Northeast tomorrow as today's nor'easter sweeps into Maine and a large upper-air low settles over the region in its wake. The heaviest snow will bury the Pine Tree State, but snow showers will coat much of New England, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In fact, substantial amounts are likely in the mountains. And, in addition to everything else, lake-effect snows will gradually crank up of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Temperatures will be noticeably below early March norms with a significant wind chill over the Mid-Atlantic region. Highs are expected to be mostly in the 20s and 30s with the 40s populating the lower elevations of Virginia (south of Alexandria).

Midwest
Wind-driven snow and snow showers will sweep over Wisconsin, Michigan, northeast Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and eastern Kentucky tomorrow as a large, cold upper-air gyre spins into the Northeast. Some of the heaviest snow, lake-effect, is likely along the southern shores of Lake Superior and immediately downwind of Lake Michigan in southwest lower Michigan and northwest Indiana. Temperatures in the Midwest will be well below late-winter averages with highs ranging from the teens in eastern North Dakota and parts of the Upper Midwest to the 30s in the Ohio Valley. Strong, gusty winds will make it feel even colder. The Plains will be milder with highs ranging upward to the 50s in western Nebraska and western Kansas.

South
Temperatures will be well below seasonal means in the Deep South and Florida tomorrow with blustery winds in the Southeast making it feel even chillier there. To add to the wintry ambiance, snow showers will dust eastern Tennessee and the southern Appalachians. Meanwhile, temperatures west of the Mississippi River will be closer to early March norms. Overall, highs are expected to range from the 30s in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina to the 70s in south Texas and southern Florida.

West
A trough of low pressure pressing toward the Northwest from the Pacific will spread showers and mountain snow into western Washington and western Oregon tomorrow, with the precipitation perhaps reaching as far south as California's Napa Valley by late in the day. The heaviest rainfall, maybe a half-inch to an inch, is expected in western Washington. Snow levels in the Cascades are forecast to range from 3500 to 5000 feet, north to south. Farther east, scattered snow showers will dot the Rockies. High temperatures will be near seasonal levels in most of West, although readings in eastern Washington, northern Idaho, Montana and eastern Wyoming will be well above average.
