About a month ago, I got aggressively political on a non-political forum and pissed off the locals. I was mobbed by every rightie on the board and basically told that I was no longer welcome. One poster in particular (we'll call him 'Frank') finally told me to 'fuck off' and several others echoed the sentiment.

Hey... I deserved it. I was not only bringing politics into a place where it didn't belong, but I was being a total ASS about it.

Here's the thing... I waited about a month before going back to the board and re-registering with a new username and all new info. I post my first post under my new identity and 'Frank' immediately recognizes me! How the hell did that happen? Is it possible this guy can check my ISP info or what? I certainly didn't give him any clues... even used a different writing style...

What could possibly have happened?

1. I don't know, but I'm curious how you changed your writing style.

2. Mostly spelling and punctuation errors.

Also avoided my tendency to use ellipses (...) and used NO words that sound overly educated. I also wrote in choppy, subject-verb-object sentences (the folks on that board know me for being longwinded and convoluted.

Just avoided the things that had become my hallmarks... refrained from calling anyone a 'Bush-loving ass-maggot' or telling them that their 'simple-minded jingoism makes me want to hurl.'

4. He might've been going by your IP address. For instance, this is

how FR bans you "for life" if you get banned there.

I sometimes wish we'd do something like that here.

5. There are a few ways.

Most likely they had a way to check your IP address. Or they could be on the lookout to see what page you came from (the referring page) and busted you on that.

Or maybe Frank just took a wild-ass stab and got it right.

Could be... but the dude spotted me immediately and was quite certain of it. Others on the board told me to ignore Frank, as he tends to be harsh with newbies, but he knew exactly who I was!

As far as he knows, I haven't even read his post. I don't think he is affiliated with the web-site, so if he's seeing my ISP info, he's got some kinda spy shit happening.

I will hang back and see what happens, but he will have to prove that he knows who I am. I will admit nothing!

I just went to the forum in question and looked at 'Frank's' profile...

Under "hobbies" he lists 'Watching You'

I think he is into net spying...
