For my 1000th post - PLAN OUR VACATION FOR US!
I have too many destinations in mind, so it would be good to hear some of yours!

US or Canada, on the cheap, two vacations, 10 days each. Kid is grown so just us two, we are in our mid 40's, we like walking, don't mind being in the middle of nowhere, not real daredevils, must include good food! We like to sightsee. We adore beautiful views/art/scenery, we also like small town ambiance and traveling in the out of the ordinary places. Favorite months for vacation are any time the kiddies are still in school, so May, then Sept, Oct.

Long term married couple, we don't really like to do days and days in the car, so short jaunts (couple of hours) to get from place to place are better. No RV suggestions please, unless it is for a short part of the trip.

Where should we go?!?!?!

1. What's your starting location?
Northeast, Great Lakes, Northwest???? I figure you must be in one of those spots if you are including going to Canada.

3. You get more for your money in Canada
Vancouver has a lot to offer. Here's a link to some info:

(It's cheaper to fly into Seattle usually)

Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are also lovely.

14. Go to Alaska
Do Seward, Anchorage, Homer, Danali. You will never regret it. I went for three weeks and it was the best vacation I ever had. We flew in to Anchorage and rented a conversion van. It was beyond beautiful. We left late June and returned in July so we were there when there was very little actual night. I didn't sleep for more than 4 hours a night but I felt great! Once I got home I slept for 4 solid days, but it was worth it.

Have Fun

If you want to stay closer to home, try Ely, Minnesota and the boundary waters area. Beautiful and some great small resorts which are very reasonable.

6. New Orleans and the surrounding plantations, as well as
Cajun country. Good food, great walking city...

Octobers for Aruba. Just splurge on the airfare and GO.

13. My first thought was New Orleans also
Big town, but the PEOPLE there have a real friendly 'small-town' feel (I grew up in rural PA)

I was just there (first time) over New Years...lots of 'SIGHTS' to see... and the FOOD?

OMFG THE FOOD!

I told my SO that I want to go back for a week, just to try every tiny little resturant EVERYWHERE!

Lots of small (cheap) rooms in the city...and the BEST food is EVERYWHERE! It's not just the fancy, expensive places...I saw some small 'diner' type joints that had lines A BLOCK LONG waiting for 8-dollar specials!

18. The Hotel Monteleone was one of the best hotels we've stayed at
(late December) and we've been to some nice ones. It's very old, still privately owned, and boy howdy can you tell it's family-held--they relly care about the place & the guests. Decent prices, too!

was the best, cheapest vacation we ever took. I'd love to be able to go back.

11. Canadian side. We stayed at the Melody Motel. This time of year is cheap.
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 07:52 PM by shesemsmom
prices increase end of may. There was a pool right out side our door About 5 miles from the falls. enjoy if you go. The motel was clean but be warned there is a lot of prostitution there. UH not at the motel. Clean family motel.By the way the food way wonderfull all around town and my Hubby scouted out the best places. Thats why he goes on vacation lol

16. Take a trip up the coast of Lake Michigan
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 08:09 PM by erinlough
You could hit the coast in South Haven, MI (quaint and lots to do) the next day travel 1 hour and stay for a couple of days in Saugatuck (my favorite shopping town and a very open place). Leave for a two hour drive up to Ludington (a whole different flavor and kind of an up north hunting town with boats). I think from there you could take the car ferry over to Wisconsin or you could continue up to Traverse City then Mackinac Island or stay on the mainland. Move down the other side of the lake slowly, a stop in Madison and some fun downtown, and have your final night in Chicago with some theater and a nice room on the Michigan Mile. That would be my idea of some fun!
