Poll question: Favorite song featuring indecipherable lyrics |
|
(ie, you can't pick out the actual words) as against incomprehensible (ie, you can decipher the words, but not the meaning).

So indecipherable, it was banned for being obscene! (Even though it's just a sweet love song about a sailor who misses his girl.)

Ever tried playing the 45 at 33 1/3 so you could hear the "dirty stuff"? Me too!
Like me, all you probably got was "Lloouuiiee, Llooeeiiee, Heeey, Heeeeey, Weee gotta goohhh NOWWW...."
But you can't beat the rhythm!

31. Or..Pretty Ballerina... |
|
Hard enough even when you have they lyrics. Hauntingly beautiful to say the least.
David
I had a date with a pretty ballerina Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes I asked her for this dance and then she obliged me Was I surprised, yeah Was I surprised, no not at all
I called her yesterday, it should have been tomorrow I could not keep the joy that was inside I begged for her to tell me if she really loved me Somewhere a mountain is moving Afraid it`s moving without me
I had a date with a pretty ballerina Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes I asked her for this dance and then she obliged me Was I surprised, yeah Was I surprised, no not at all
And when I wake on a dreary Sunday morning I open up my eyes to find there`s rain And something strange within said, go ahead and find her Just close your eyes, yeah Just close your eyes and she`ll be there
She`ll be there...
David

14. That song by Pearl Jam where Vedder sings "I don't wanna staaayyy..." |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 08:58 PM by northwest
It was in the same album that had "Black" in it. Damn, I forgot the song. You couldn't understand a DAMN thing Eddie was singing. he must've been SOOOO high during that recording.
It goes "Ahm ma sayyy, onna mid nyohhhh weddahh.... Ah ih go and I go, I don't wanna staaaayyyy...."

Vedder consistantly alters the lyrics from day to day. There are no set lyrics to the song.
It was not released on the Ten, the album with Black on it. It was not included on a studio album, but part of a single.

The song is about someone who made a mess in a bathroom, hence the line "Scott tissue that I wish you saw."

27. There's a song off the first Robert Plant solo album ... |
|
I think it's 'Fat Lip' that has a line that, from the very first time I heard it, sounds like "Keep your hands in your pocket/she can shit more gold than a kangaroo."
He never published lyrics for the song, and I've seen a couple of interpretations that made more sense, but they didn't sound like what Bob's singing. Until I die, I'm going to be convinced she can shit more gold than a kangaroo.
Also, I nominate approximately 87% of the Replacements catalogue. There are only four or five songs that are remotely comprehensible.
I used to subscribe to a fan newsletter where people tried to interpret 'Mats lyrics. One of them approached Westerberg after a solo show to ask him about a lyric to a certain song that nobody had been able to parse. He said, "aw, man -- good luck. I have no f'in idea what I was singing, I was so ripped all the time, back then. If you get something that sounds good could you, you know, send it to me?"

28. "Exile on Main Street," the entire album. |
|
I can make out like two sentences at a time, but that's it. "You can be my partner in crime," "Don't wanna talk about Jesus, I just wanna see his face...." All the more frustrating because the lyrics I CAn understand sound brilliant.
Also, just about any average "BlingBling" type rapper in the last few years...Oh, for the lucidity of Public Enemy or NWA! Ever hear the song "Never Scared" by Bonecrusher? Sounds like the Hulk regurgitating cookies and reading divorce court transcripts at the same time. Really fucked up.

I love that album. The best that the Stones ever released IMO but for the life of me, I cant decipher more than a few words here and there. Tumblin Dice is the most undecipherable of all on that great album.

|
http://www.keno.org/Songlistnlyrics.htmHe's even got lyrics for bootlegsAnd for the record.....
TUMBLING DICE (M. Jagger/K. Richards)
Wo Yeah! (Wo, wo)
Women think I'm tasty, but they're always tryin' to waste me And make me burn the candle right down, But baby, baby, I don't need no jewels in my crown.
'Cause all you women is low down gamblers, Cheatin' like I don't know how, But baby, baby, there's fever in the funk house now. This low down bitchin' got my poor feet a itchin', Don't you know you know the duece is still wild.
Baby, I can't stay, you got to roll me And call me the tumblin' dice.
Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry, Don't you see the time flashin' by. Honey, got no money, I'm all sixes and sevens and nines. Say now baby, I'm the rank outsider, You can be my partner in crime.
But baby, I can't stay, You got to roll me and call me the tumblin', Roll me and call me the tumblin' dice.
Oh, my, my, my, I'm the lone crap shooter, Playin' the field ev'ry night.
But baby, I can't stay, You got to roll me and call me the tumblin' dice, (Call me the tumblin') Got to roll me (yayes), Got to roll me, Got to roll me (Oh yeah) Got to roll me Got to roll me (yeah) Got to roll me (Keep on rolling) Got to roll me (Keep on rolling) Got to roll me (Keep on rolling) Got to roll me My baby, call me the tumblin' dice, yeah Got to roll me Baby sweet as sugar (Got to roll me) Yeah, my, my, my yeah (Got to roll me) I went down baby, oh Got to roll me (hit me) Baby I'm down

34. What?? Nothing by R.E.M.? |
|
My brother played in a bar band in the 80s. He always liked covering R.E.M. tunes because you could make up the words and no one would know the difference. Later on Michael Stipe learned to e-nun-ci-ate, but who can figure the lyrics to 'Radio Free Europe' without looking them up?
