In fact, any dog bigger than a cat scares the shit out of me.

and I'm 6'6"

Nah, I'm a cat-person. :)

We always had cats on the farm where I grew up .. they weren't house-trained, they never went into the house, they just stuck around, slept in the barn, etc.

Our first "domestic" cat was named Margareth Thatcher.

You can blame my oldest brother for that one. :D

41. Hmm, you need some help.
And the best way to help yourself is to forget yourself, forget all your needs and hurtful troubles and release yourself into the unknown.

It sounds dumb and very "New Age", I know, but just forget all that and focus on yourself for a while......

... and then - when you are GIVEN THE CHANCE - act 100% selfless - and you will feel totally restored.

64. I also have Norwegian roots.
On my mom's side, Stadsbygd, Strinda, Trondheim, Lardal, Akershus. On my dad's side Meraker. A couple Swede's mixed in there also.

One thing I wish I knew how to find out is the eventual fate of my 2Xgreat grandparents in Trondheim after my great grandmother came to the US. My relatives say that the three sisters that came over never talked much about the "old country." The youngest sister came over in 1919 and listed her father as the closest living relative address Kalvskindets Sykhus. I assume that is/was the equivalent of a nursing home, as he would have been 74 at the time.

Eesh, wish I could give you more info on your ancestors, dude.
I guess all I can tell you is that Kalvskindets Sykhus isn't actually a resident house. Sykhus means a hospital. I'm guessing she was born there. Kalvskindet means "Kalf-skin" but I've never heard of a hospital with that name until now :(

67. She was 17 in 1919
and her dad would have been 74 so a hospital doesn't seem too odd. He was a Vognmandsdreng, as I understand it, it means he drove a horse drawn cart for hire.

Well yes, "vogn" means "wagon", and "man" means .. err .. "man"... but "DRENG!" that means a male servant. A dreng is male, I'm pretty sure of that.

Five weeks...holy moly! Nice!! My father had to work 25 years to get a month off...and he was unionized! (he's now retired)

Budbringeren was...interesting. Ah, I preferred Insomnia. And right now, I've got Zero Kelvin (don't remember the Norwegian name) out, and will watch it this weekend.

What Norwegian movies do you recommend? I've seen plenty of Swedish and Danish, but only a couple of Norwegian ones.

Ancestors originally from Vik i Sogn, Telemark, Voss and my paternal side home area is Vik on the Sognefjord. Stunning scenery but don't know how to get there from Oslo. I can also sing "Ja vi elsker" since the Norwegian royals always visit my alma mater when they are in the US. And lots of Norwegian students have gone there too over the years. Hopperstad Stavekirk is just down the road from where one of my distant relatives has a house.

83. Thanks for the picture. Makes me more determined
To go back for a visit. Some people like to go on tours but my wife and I like to wander on our own. I don't ski either but I do like thoroughly checking out places I haven't been to before. Do you know if there are routine passenger boat tours that go up and down the fjords?

74. Do you fuckers carry concrete blocks around all the time?
And bend steel rods and pull busses around with your teeth?

I swear, all of the "World's Strongest Men" are Scandinavian. Just watch ESPN for proof.

As a big favor, why don't you go down to Belgium and kick all of their arrogant asses.

Thanks in advance.

77. Ok, first of all:

a) NO.

b) No, too. And a third nono! Trust me, if there were strong men in Norway, our news would speak of nothing else.

As of the favour.

Fuck Belgium. We had this very cool radio show on for a while, which consentrated on all the negative things in live - they did a whole serious about Belgium ... IT LASTED WEEKS, MAN!

Anyway, the show got scrapped because it was too evil.

82. How's the skiing?
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 11:09 PM by rockymountaindem
I'm from Colorado, where we claim to have the best skiing in the world (and I'm pretty sure we do). They say skiing was invented in your country. What's it like skiing in Norway?

On edit: What are question marks for anyway? I forget to put them where they're needed, and then drop them in where they aren't necessary. Damn question marks.

85. Do you know any Sands?
I'm part Norwegian. That branch of the family had the surname Sand. I don't know if it's common or not. My mother is the blacksheep in her family - so I know nothing.
