As long as it's hardcore, it's fine by me. Everyone on the "Time Life

I also would like Kasey Chambers, a talented young Australian singer get more exposure. She's kind of alt-country, I guess.

to your excellent list - probably Connie Smith, for Hank Williams - if I had to keep the list to six.

26. Yes, Roy Clark.
I used to love it when Letterman would have Roy Clark on from his home. Roy would be washing his car the entire show, and Letterman would keep checking in on the progress.

12. One thing, though
Martina's new self-titled album isn't up to her standards - she lost me with all the strictly female-centered songs, and this is coming from someone who enjoys Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton. Also, the album's a little too slow.

Roseanne Cash
Steve Earle
Rodney Crowell

And no matter how I order the list, it still comes up wrong. So I won't even mention Flatt & Scruggs and The Everly Brothers!

19. When I was a kid
we watched all the country music shows on WSM Saturday afternoons. Those shows were live. I remember the Porter Waggoner show even before he signed "Pretty Miss Dolly Parton", the Bobby Lord show and others. This was the early and mid 60's and those shows had all the big stars on in the afternoon before they appeared at the Opry that night. It was a lot of fun for me as a kid to see that stuff every week.

One is "He'll Have To Go," which I think is a wonderful record. The other is "Four Walls," which I don't care for.

32. I hate country music......
.....overall. However, I love Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and many of the old school country artists. I also like a lot of the "alternative" country bands out today. Most "country" music today is total and utter shit and present day bands do a good job of ignoring the roots of the this genre.

33. Then you DON'T hate country music!

The stuff you cited as liking is what I consider "real" country music. And your disdainful comments about today's "country" music shows that you know the important differences between the genuine article and the bullshit hacks that Nashville keeps puking out (and that the FM "country" stations broadcast).

As such, I'd say that you don't hate country music at all! :toast:

35. I can't believe nobody has Toby Keith on their list
or even Darryl Worley. :) Just kidding.

I actually used to be a big country music fan. This was as recent as a year ago. When the whole boycott of the Dixie Chicks broke out, I decided to counter boycott and haven't listened to a country radio station since.

I still listen to a few singers. I like some of the older ones like George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard. Willie Nelson is one of my favorites.

Of course, I listen to the Dixie Chicks. I like Billy Ray Cyrus and Garth Brooks. I enjoy Shania Twain and Faith Hill, but I'm not sure if they can still be classified as country.

I always thought he was a clever songwriter.

I'm surprised that Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys aren't on someone's list. I haven't heard that much of them, but they do crack me up.
