Talk about mixed feelings! |
|
I just read an article in the Dallas Observer (alternative weekly) about a political uprising in Frisco, Texas.
FRISCO. A gated community with VERY expensive homes north of Dallas. VERY conservative.
But apparently the city council and custom home builders are in bed with each other. WAY in bed with each other, and the city council rules on matters in ways that protect the home builders and not with the interest of city or the people in mind. At all. They're apparently pretty brazen about it.
Well, one couple bought a home for almost $400,000 and the house was crap. HUGE problems with it and in dealing with the home builder and the city, they discovered the very very cozy relationship betw. city council and home builders.
So they got 4500 signatures on a petition to force the city to hold an election on May 7 to change city council so that they wouldn't be so close to home builders. Of course city council is fighting it hard. (Get this: there are over 66,000 people in Frisco, and only 2500 voted in the last election in November--that big one--so they have almost twice as many signatures as the number of people who voted last, and that included a presidential election!)
Now here's the mixed feelings part: I'm glad Frisco, of all places, is standing up to inappropriate local government practices. I'm glad they're standing up to unethical home builders.
But on the other hand, I have to admit I'm having a DAMN hard time working up any sympathy for people who pay $400,000 to live in an exclusive, gated community.
Is that wrong of me? I've never been faced with this before, as I've never heard of people living in such expensive, exclusive communities trying to fight the man (most of those homes are now worth over a million, btw). I'm CONFLICTED.
