3. why yes - here in Texas we have two kinds:
pier and beam foundations and slab foundations

No basements - scratch the soil and you're sitting on a solid bed of limestone covered with smectite clay (it swells tremendously when wet / shrinks when dry).

My old house is 40's pier and beam - and replaced all the wiring and plumbing & floor furnaces when I moved in. Not a place to be for claustrophobics or fat plumbers!

4. Not the house
But I've been deep enough in the bowels of the UT Law School that the floor was dirt.

6. Yes, I've been under my house!
We built our house several years ago, and my husband wanted the crawl space to be generous. A lot of dirt was excavated and we ended up with a space that's tall enough to stand up in. All the service/trade people love it. One of our furnaces is down there, and our hot water heater, plus a huge storage area for tiles and left-over paint, etc. No crawling through spider webs etc. for us or anyone else who goes down there.
