they're hypoallergenic because they lack the protein in their saliva that causes allergies (it gets stuck to their fur, fur drifts around, you sneeze). You can have a kitty if you want one-now that's something to be happy about!

Maine Coons, Norwengian and Siberian Forest cats are very similar in size and temperment, but only Siberians have the gene mutation that makes them hypoallergenic.

Do you know if there's any way to make sure it has the mutation so that it won't bother my allergies? Do I have to just trust the breeder?

which includes a questionnaire about your allergies and a sample of the kitties hair. All Siberians have the mutation, but a small percentage of people (10-15%) are still allergic to them, that's why testing is encouraged.

You can also ask about retired showcats; they usually cost no more than a cat from the humane society, and they tend to be well behaved and very healthy.

But my local vet is out of town, as is my specialist vet, who is 40 minutes away. I like the lady who's covering for him, but it's supposed to be bad weather tomorrow. I'm lonely, too, so you're not alone. I hate winter. It may just be the weather. I wish it was spring. Sorry I'm not more cheerful.:shrug:
