I'm sick and fucking tired of my piece-of-shit DSL connection!!!
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 02:37 AM by NightTrain
I swear to Christ, it's as bad as dial-up--especially since I had a cable modem for four years until I moved last summer and let SBC sweet-talk me into a year-long contract for this fucking arthritic tortoise! Said contract, of course, includes a $200 fee for early termination. Oh, and did I mention that SBC blocks access to all Usenet binary groups?

Once July rolls around and that goddamned contract expires, I'm getting back on broadband so fucking fast, SBC won't know what hit them!

1. I'm on cable, but I've always wondered how DSL compared to it...
...doesn't sound very fun....

2. It's cheaper than cable, and with damned good reason: DSL sucks!
Preserve your sanity: stay with broadband!!!

7. DSL is also broadband.

Services vary, yours sounds horrible. But, as this link shows, cable is not necessarily the answer. I have outstanding DSL service, but the quality of service depends more on the provider than the type of service.

9. When I say "broadband," I mean "cable."
Considering how horrid my service is, I have trouble remembering that DSL is considered broadband, too! :eyes:

17. depends on where you live and on the ISP.

It has nothing to do with DSL - the chance of getting a bad DSL conncetion is about as big as the chance of getting a bad cable connection. (Plus that cable has a few more security issues.) Telecom companies sell contracts for Broadband internet, even if their capacity is already saturated and/or the distance to the
switch is too long. Sometimes they don't even have the infrastructure to provide a reliable service to start with. Trick is: always ask your neighbors first and have the telecom company guarantee the bandwidth/reliability.

Many people are very happy with DSL, myself included.

3. I Have Had Cable Connection For Over 6 Years Now
Overall, the experience has been very, very positive.

I had heard nothing but complaints about DSL.

6. I have been on DSL for 1.4 years
and do not have many complaints. Of course, I have faster than their standard package, and I stepped up from dial-up, rather than stepping down from cable. When I used my laptop at my bro-in-laws, it was very fast, but then again, my laptop is a newer machine than my desktop.

5. Where the hell do you live?
Your contract sounds like the crappy old ISDN days. I have DSL with 1500/750 speeds and get all of usenet, my ISP is Speakeasy. I can cancel anytime without a penalty, and I got a free X box for signing up. My actual connects are outstanding, the best service I have ever had.

8. Truth be told, my P.C. could be part of the problem.
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 03:03 AM by NightTrain
It's time for a new one, but I don't have the money right now, so I have to make do. But even at that, my old cable connection to this machine was much, much faster than what I'm stuck with now!

To answer your question: I live out in the country, in a rural part of Eastern Connecticut. That I'm located far away from the phone company might just be the problem. A friend of mine who lives near the phone company has nothing but good things to say about his DSL service.

Whatever the case, I'm definitely going back to cable once I serve my 12-month sentence at the SBC Yahoo Penitentiary.

10. I agree
You lack options, and your DSL provider has taken advantage of the situation. DSL and Cable are pretty much comparable in terms of technology, but in reality, service varies depending on the provider. I have had a few stinkers for DSL and Cable service. Long contracts are always a red flag. Hope you get out of Internet purgatory.

12. I was just going to mention Speakeasy myself.
I've known the owners from when they first started up that Speakeasy Internet Cafe, about 10 years ago. For that reason, I chose them when I went up to DSL.

But a friend, who's very savvy on such things, told me that they're not only now nationwide, but are very higly regarded in the internet community. He wasn't kidding; their 24x7 customer service department can't be beat ... courteous, patient, and very knowledgable. You will need and appreciate that ...GUARANTEED .. for startup, and at least 2 or 3 times a year afterwards. Check them out.

11. I just got a cable connection last November.
After having dial-up for six years. I really, really have no idea how I lasted that long without it.

But now I'm getting impatient and I want something even faster. It's spoiled me.

14. I've had SBC DSL for a year and it's been great
I pay $26.95 and have had a rock solid 1.3meg/384k connection. Modem and setup were all free.

15. What do you get with cable that is different from DSL over the phone line?
I mean, do you get any thing that you don't get with DSL over the phone line because it is cable?

18. Have you run speed tests yet?
http://www.techdepot.com/pro/speed.asp?rd=1&

If you're not getting the advertised speed, complain to your ISP (this should also eliminate whether it's your computer or your ISP)...:hi:
