Heavy metal opera debuts in Norway.......

KRISTIANSUND, Norway (AFP) - What was described as the world's first heavy-metal opera premiered in this small western Norwegian town.

The "Faust - Metal Opera" mixed music from Charles Francois Gounod's 1859 opera based on the legend of the philosopher who sells his soul to the devil with a heavy metal theme composed by a local band called Pica Fierce.

"When it comes to the theme, Faust is perfect for heavy metal and vice versa," Kristiansund opera chief Jan Karstensen told AFP, pointing out that both the legend and heavy metal music address the eternal battle between good and evil.

The audience, including a large number of young people, appeared to agree, clapping and stomping wildly as the last, screeching guitar note hung in the air as the bodies of Faust and his beloved Margerethe lay on the black stage.
