We've decided on BABY NAMES (sort of)
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 03:40 PM by underpants
So my wife and I brainstormed through the weekend on names for our (knock on wood) baby. BTW- NO we aren't going to start referring to it by name before the (knock on wood) birth.

One of my main duties was trying to figure out what/how their name might be construed into some sort of stupid little joke as children often do. Oh and -Why three names?- I always said I would give my children three names and let them figure out what they wanted to go by....I just hope it doesn't change every other week.

If it is a girl ( I think it will be)we have decided on

Josephine Virginia Kelley ______

My last name is two syllables if that helps any.

The Josephine part is just a name my wife likes, I do to. Aside for "Josie and the hehehe Pussy-hehehe-cats" and the Napoleon thing I determined it to be safe. The Virginia part is not for the state really it is for two women in our families or connected to our families. The Kelley part is sort of a family name.

If it is a boy (my wife thinks it is going to be a boy) we had decided on

John Daniel Jacob ______

John is for my grandfather and an uncle. Daniel is family name in her family. Jacob is my brother's name.

I told my wife that JohnJacobJingleHeimerSchmidt.... came to mind but she said she had never heard of it  well she got to her office today and as soon as she told everyone about the names every single guy started singing JohnJacobJingleHeimerSchmidt....

Apparently Barney the stupid Dinosaur sings it all the time too so EVERY kid will know about it. I thought the Daniel in the middle might take care of it but it seems not to be the case.

We are sticking with John Daniel but we have to find a third name-BTW my brother HATES the name Jacob anyway.

We should find out the sex on Wednesday. Stupid Barney.

We might go with Dwight or Joseph as the second middle names if it is a boy. We haven't decided.

I wouldn't worry about anything with the boy's name; it's not like the middle names come up on a regular basis anyway.

30. I did.
And my name's common and plain. I gave my kids fairly unique/could possibly be considered weird first names and more traditional middle names, in case they'd like to escape any obvious teasing.

Kids are cruel... of that there's no doubt. Heck... one kid I knew would even make jokes out of other kids' initials. All in good fun, of course. :)

Because in the Italian tradition, the first boy is named after the grandfather.

Yes we wanted to stay as far as possible away from the trendy names. Jacob is trendy?

A few years ago a friend named his son Henry and the nurses thought it was the coolest thing ever all they heard was Justin Taylor Jordan Carson etc. the traditional name was actually out of the ordinary. I don't understand it.

there is a magical process of naming children where the child's spirit whispers their name to their mom right around the time of their birth.

I heard my kid's name around the 5th month of pregnancy but patience truly is not his strong suit.

I waited to tell anyone until I saw the whites of his eyes though.

Those are lovely names.

Have a great baby !

Congrats.

on edit- one of my fave people on the planet's named Josie.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=mHu1JdP9zH&isbn=1581821913&itm=1

Thesis: There's something wrong with EVERY possible name you could choose, and the logic they use is much like what you employed - what names would the kid be called at school.

I looked up my name: Richard - "It's what this book was written for: Dick....etc etc etc" this great rant about what a crappy name Dick was.

Don't buy it - just browse it in the cafe at B&N. It's a good hour or two of fun.

Congrats again, pants family! :toast:

I like those semi-obscure names, too, Like Josephine. A close friend of mine has a child named Iris.

Just whatever you do, do NOT give the girl child a middle name of "Marie". We suffered through that in the 80s.

44. Good idea, but you realize how hard it is to change
after you've been calling it by that name for a long time, right?

My daughter decided at the age of seven she wanted to go by her middle name. And we tried, we really did. We even got her teachers in on it, because she was so serious. But even she kept putting her first name on her school papers, forgetting, etc.

Finally she just gave up.

But hey, maybe it'll be different for you! It's always good to have choices.

What we DID do, though, was give her a "convertible" first name. There is the official version of it, the nickname she uses now, and there is another nickname for it that is more sophisticated and older sounding. So if she is ever a suit in the corporate world (God forbid) she can just switch over to either the longer, official first name or the more sophisticated version of the nickname she's using now. That solved that.

(I don't want to say what the name is, but think of the example of William, Bill and Billy. Like that. She's going by the "Billy" version now, but can choose Bill or William when she's older if she wants. Obviously her name isn't really William for anyone confused by this.)

I'd replace one of them (sounds like you could drop Jacob, since your brother doesn't like it) with something longer and more unusual, although not outright wierd. You might need to rearrange the order to get it all to sound right.

Keep thinking about it until something feels right. Then keep quiet about it until the birth, it's more fun to surprise everybody, especially if you keep the sex a secret, too.

69. or the lead singer of The Pussycats?
Actually, the first image that came to mind was of Josephene Baker doing the Banana Dance for Napoleon....

I guess I need more coffee!

I have a deep love for classic names that have fallen away from common usage. We named our daughter Margaret Grace Whitney McLargehuge.

Margaret because we both love that name.
Grace because Ian (her big brother) picked her first middle name.
Whitnet because it's Mrs. McLargehuge's mom's maiden name.
