Good god. For $85 (typical) street price, this is a great deal.

ipod support, virtual machine software, a quantum jump in GUI level... vastly expanded laptop support, and tons more. Novell ROCKS!!! I've NEVER seen this much advancement in a SUSE (or any other distro) release.

And according to an anandtech.com study, SUSE is the FASTEST of Linux distros, and it cremates Windows...

I've read a LOT on Linux, IBM, Novell, and other big names lately. I'd swear that they seem to want to be rid of Macroslop too!

Want change? Let's make it or stop whining and accept the ramming we get from Microsoft's macroslop. I fully support and applaud Novell on this.

1. You mean I might be able to have
an OS that won't crash if I click on the wrong link from a search engine?

Of course, until it's widely accepted, I'll be stuck with Windows...

6. In other words, stick with windows then and don't whine every time when:
* the os crashes
* you need to re-activate your computer or application because you added or changed ONE computer component.
* you get a virus
* you get a worm
* you get your ID stolen
* you need to defrag (it's a lie that NTFS needs no defragging; it's also a lie that it's impossible to corrupt)
* when you install a program, anotber crashes
* the registry gets corrupt
* the system needs to be reinstalled because the registry is so damn large that performance crawls (even Microsoft says you a fresh format every 18 months is recommended! Now ask about re-activation again...)

MAKE the future. Don't sit back and whine about it, waiting for every true progressive to do the work. That's sickening.

10. Where do I sign up?
Does Word work on it? I don't care if IE or OE do.

12. Get off your high horse

Like it or not, some of us have to deal with the way things are, not the way we WANT it.

I'm in an online grad program (through Florida State University, not one of those unaccredited places) that REQUIRES Windows OS.

So pardon me for not being 'progressive' :eyes:

8. Hell, people don't know how to use Windows... It only proves Gates wrong.
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 01:32 PM by HypnoToad
Hell, people in 1980 could run an infintely more complex Atari 800. Good grief. Why do people go nuts when Windows isn't dumb easy enough for them to use?

Sorry. I will use terminology. I will show I am even somewhat competent. I will not dumb down. I will not patronize. Lots of people whine about kids of today being dumbed down. I can't imagine why. </sarky>

11. Its called jargon
and not using it shows a willingness to communicate with people who aren't computer geeks or professionals. Communicating effectively is not dumbing down.

3. SUSE is a good distro (from my limited use of it)
And it's a great one for Linux newbies, as it's an automated install, and the interface will be familiar enough to Windows users. Hope it does well, though I wish they could have made it before Novell bought them out. This is Orrin Hatch's favorite corporation we're talking about.

4. This looks very interesting
I can't say that I'm as excited as you, HT, but this is *very* interesting... I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

7. Can I download it and use sans support and sans paying, like Mandrake
or Fedora? If so I will definitely give it a try.

9. You get what you pay for, but I DO know that SuSE WILL have a free version
albeit not until May or June.

14. Will it install?
Over the past 4 years I have attempted hundreds of Linux installs, using at least 10 different distros on various H/W configs -- with the H/W all supposedly supported by the distros. The number of them that produced a bootable, usable system, where everything worked was maybe only 5%. Some could be twiddled, others were hopeless.

Mice are a problem, video is a huge problem, reasonable defaults are a problem, dialog sizes when you're forced to drop back to 640x480 VGA is a problem.

15. HypnoToad, this is a good subject for broad discussion, not just for geeks
I hope that didn't come across as offensive. :evilfrown:

I'm 45, have been using computers for most of my adult life, though not at all when I was a kid. I don't know a thing about programming. To me, my computer is like an irritating TV--irritating mainly because it promised to be fast and is soooo fuckin' slow! I mean something is clearly wrong with my Windows XP. I'm ready to chuck the whole computer, but that bugs me because it's not the hardware that's so awful (though it's not state-of-the-art--it's a 2002 Compaq Presario), but the operating system. I really want to scrape it all off and start from scratch with a system that won't make me want to throttle it.

I think a revolution is needed in the way people think about their computers. We think too much about them the way we think of everything else we consume--i.e., as something to consume, as it comes, ready-made, according to the producer's specs. It's supply side consumerism, if you follow me. Most of us live with shitty computers because Bill Gates wants us to live with shitty computers--I mean, he wants us to use his shitty operating system. He doesn't want us to think about why, given about two years, everything stops operating reliably with his system. So we don't. We just take this crap until we can't stand it anymore, and then we buy crap version 2.0.

Are you with me, HT? Am I making any sense?

Computing is a political issue. It's not just for techies anymore.

16. No thanks. I'll pass...
Since my current OS suits me just fine and has allowed me to trim my work schedule down to an average of 6 hours a day/5 days a week and still bring in an embarrassingly sizeable salary. And be about 95% Microsoft-free to boot.

But that's just me. It sure is a welcome sign to see that the industry's heavy hitters are taking Microsoft to task finally. My question is what's taken them so long?
