Grandmother born in Carndonagh, County Donegal. Her name was Katerine MacCallion and her mothers name was Fanny McLaughlin, my grandmother died when my dad was only four years old.

Magaw, I believe also from the County Donegal (immigrating a generation before my Grandmother.) She died when my father was just past a toddler - so we lost connection to that part of the family. Am more in touch with the (half) Norwegian part of my heritage - both Grandparents immigrated, and my mother spent some years back in Norway. But that's a nonsequitor on St. Pat.s' day... sorry for the diversion.

name. We refer to ourselves as the illiterate side of the family since there are those of our name who have the correct spelling.

I'm only 1/4 Irish, but 1/2 Greek. That 1/2 of me helped create the Western Civilization that the Irish saved.

Actually, I could care less about Ethnic identity. Think of myself as an American ...or... more accurately, a United States of American.

80. I'm 25% Irish. One great-grandmother from County Down,

another great-grandmother from Dublin. If I ever get all the genealogy of my mother's family sorted out, there may be more Irish lines.

The names I know of are Canfield and McLean. My Haynes line may also be Irish, and I think likely is.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

in the late 1880's, they dropped the "o" prefix from our name. most of my irish cousins appear to live in the cork area of ireland. my name means "from the valley of lin" in gaelic.

my mothers family is a mix of english and welsh as well. they were also among the 2nd set of jamestown settlers in the 1680's.

i am green eyed and blond, yet grow a very red beard...go figure....

our family's coat of arms.....

...from a family named "Kneale," which is apparently the same as the O'Neills of Ireland and the Clan McNeill of Barra of Scotland.

I was speaking to a representative of Clan McNeill, and they said that the entire lot of us are descended from the Irish High King Niall of the Nine Hostages, who ruled just before St. Patrick began his reptile-removal and monotheism-conversion project.

I should note that the Clan McNeill guy explained it with a tone of "Oh, well. If we have to be of -- gad! -- Irish descent, at least it's from Irish royalty." ;-)

I should also note that, according to one, shall we say, fascinating history of the Clan I came across, our fame extends far into the past beyond High King Niall. As the book explained it, what was to become the Niall clan originally came to Ireland from Spain, and before that from ancient Egypt. In fact, the daugher of Pharoah who rescued Moses from the bullrushes was none other than the wife of an ancestor of Niall and his future clan! So, I guess that means the the 50% of my ancestry that's Jewish owes a huge debt of gratitude to the 12.5% that's Manx/Scottish/Irish/Spanish/Egyptian...
