My mom just bought a puppy!
unfortunately I don't live with my mother, and I won't get to visit her until mid May :( It's a 7 week old Cocker Spaniel named Trixie. I don't have a picture of her but from the description I got over the phone she looks something like this...

Dammit, I want to play with the puppy NOW!!!

4. I'm getting ready to buy one for when I move to Louisville.
We had a beautiful cocker when we were kids. Dusty was a good dog for kids, but I need something that will play with the cats, not beat them up, so its going to be a Chinese Crested (powderpuff), or a Shiba Inu, or a Toy Fox Terrier, or a French Bulldog, with the Shiba Inu running a strong first place right now.

9. It's kind of small, 11-13 "
I'm going to get a pure bred, so I will know what I'm getting into temperament-wise. Shiba Inus arepretty smart but independent, so APPROPRIATE training will be very important.

8. How about a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
They are good with children as well as cats. Not a good guard dog, however. I have a bad memory of shiba-inu in Japan. I was riding my bike and got attacked by one that bit me in the leg. Ever since then, I have no desire to pet one.

10. I have been admiring those too, but read that they are having
some pretty consistent and serious health issues, due to popularity of the breed, I think.

12. We have one and she is wonderful
The health issues are serious and am glad you are aware of them. Syringomyelia being the latest scare. Choosing a puppy is one of the best experiences and they are amazing companions and best friends.

13. Yes, I've been making personality and temperament #1
And I think I've read somewhere that the King Charles is the absolute best breed in those categories.

16. Okay, "One of the absolute best " then . . . .
I've been reading about the Welsh, Norfolk, and Norwich terriers too. They are highly regarded. Can't find any Norwiches though.

17. welshies are kind of hard to find ...
but they are out there ... my pup is as sweet as they come ... i've recently met a couple of border terriers (a little funny looking) but really wonderful dogs ... perhaps they are worth a look as well ...

my last pup was a foxterrier ... man, they can be a handful ... fantastic dog but not for everybody ...

if it helps, there are some online tests i've seen (sorry, no link) that help you sort out your preferences ... they include issues like tricks, watchdog, grooming, exercise, health problems, size, good with kids etc ... you could probably find the test with a "google" ...

buying from a good breeder is really important ...

18. Now, is the Welsh the larger one of the three. I forget.
How does the Welsh compare to the Fox terrier?

The Toy Fox is supposed to be somewhat less energetic as terriers go.

19. my welsh is only 15 pounds
the fox we had was between 18 and 20 ... i'm not familiar with the toy fox ...

if you're serious about a welsh, drop me a PM ... also, check out:

http://clubs.akc.org/wtca/ (the club is a bit snooty but it's a good place to start) ...

my pup is only "energetic" when we want her to be ... she's quiet unless someone approaches the house ... she's amazingly affectionate and loves to be with everyone ... she was easy to train, easy to groom and a fantastic companion ... i'm with her almost 24 hours a day ... i wouldn't hesitate to recommend the welsh terrier to anyone ...

22. I think it's the Norfolk that's the larger one then.
I don't want a teacup anything, but I do think a small dog would be better.

Thanks. I will do that.

The decision is a little bit away just yet, because my husband just took a position (General Counsel) in Louisville, so I'm here, he's there, and maybe it would be better, because I want the dog to be close to him, to wait until we are together again (once I put this house on the market). I'm still a little concerned about training a Shiba Inu, and I think he would like a Welsh or Norwich terrier.

23. i believe the norwich and norfolk terriers ...
weigh between 8 and 10 pounds ... they are both smaller than the welsh and fox terriers ...

btw, most people think my welsh is an airdale because the coloring is very similar ... the airdales go about 40 pounds ... great dogs but very, very different than the welsh ... lakeland terriers also have the black and tan look ...

btw, my sister-in-law just got a west highland terrier ... they are much more common and much easier to find ... she's owned several generations ... they're an all white dog ... i think they go around 10 - 12 pounds or so ...

14. I wanna' puppy!!!!
But in my rational moments I agree w/ my husband that 2 dogs and a cat are enough pets. Still, I LOVE puppies. Even when they're waking me up every 2 hours every night and peeing on the rug after they've been outside for 2 hours.

21. I love puppies too.
My solution is to buy a puppy that will grow up to be small. Perhaps they will keep their cuteness that way.

I would love to get a dog for my daughter. Problem is that she is allergic to long-haired dogs. Any ideas?
