Lev 24:16
"And he that names the name of the Lord, let him die the death: let all the congregation of Israel stone him with stones; whether he be a stranger or a native, let him die for naming the name of the Lord."

2. One marvels at how violent the Bible is.
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 09:35 PM by elperromagico
Really, really, violent.

Lots of sex too. Read Genesis 38 sometime.

Edit: It's Genesis 38, not Genesis 37.

4. not sure but
I think that is why i always see jewish literature or bumperstickers that say "G-d" rather than "God".

No?

5. That is probably right.
It's a warning against blasphemy, i.e. the assumption that you can know God so perfectly that you know his/her name.

I should think this would also extend to "god's" will wouldn't it? Which raises the point that no matter how certain you are that you are doing "God's Will" you must also keep the possibility that you are not, right?

Although I've always been confused by the idea of things that can happen, or be done, that are outside of an omnipotent being's will.

6. Isn't that the first commandment?
It's forbidden to take the name of the lord in vane. Just think what would have happened if GW had had tools like that to work with while he was governor of Texas. If I'm not mistaken all the commandments required capital punishment.

9. It is blasphemy to say the name of the Lord.
In Hebrew, the "name of God" is (forgive me, Lord) Yahweh. But to avoid blaspheming, God's name was replaced with "The Lord." If you'll notice in newer translations, references to God are "the LORD." In Hebrew, it would be written YHWH - no vowels.

The Latin version (Vulgate) mis-translated YHWH, and came up with a new name: Jehovah. The "Good King Jimmy" translation is from the Vulgate, errors and all. Technically, "Jehovah" does not exist.

Go ahead and commence with the "Wheel of Fortune" jokes. :)

11. We also use a hyphen when writing "L-rd." It's so as to not
use His name in vain.

12. True, dat.
Sorry, I was speaking from my Christian bias. My apologies. (In the NRSV, they use "the LORD" - capitalized - to signify where YHWH appears in the text.)

7. I'll make a nice piece of change
selling fake beards and bags of stones.

"Why would I pay for stones when I can get perfectly good ones lying on the ground?"

"Oh but not like these miss-er-sir!"

(BTW: No idea if I got those lines exactly right.)

15. The phrase "peace-loving people" doesn't spring to mind --
-- after one reads Leviticus.

We could blame its author alone but for many centuries passages of it have been used to slander and oppress others.

Time for a new author, a new book, a new re-consideration of the history of a faith of a people.

I suggest a panel that includes Elaine Pagels, Phillips Roth, Arthur Evans, Karen Armstrong, and many others.

Bad religious philosophy is like an insipient mold.

20. Add Brown to the panel, yes. I like that he's at work --
-- stirring staid cardinals to thought for a change.

It's high time to ordain women in that Church. Magdalen was an apostle, after all, so the apostolic succession clause is met.

Good suggestion.

Hit them with Luke 6:30 and watch them peal out trying to get away from the teachings of Jesus.

Luke 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

21. I prefer Ezekiel 20:25 to throw off a fundie
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 01:59 AM by I_Make_Mistakes
I will provide the quote so you understand. Ezekiel 20:25 "Moreover I gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live." Then I ask them to tell me which statues and ordinances God meant? The look of profound stupidity comes over them. End of conversation. Even God says that some of his laws where not good and man could not live by them.
edit: for quotes

I worked in Newark, DE and we had a resident bald eagle. It was cool at lunch to watch it soar.

I have an African grey parrot who has taught me a great appreciation for birds.
