How much do you tip at the salon?

For years I had my hair done at a friends home. She's stopped working due to fibromyalgia. I tipped her heavily because her prices were very low.

I'm now going to a smallish neighborhood salon. The owner does my hair. She's talented (and she's a liberal, too). I don't know what to tip at a regular salon where rent, insurance and employees make the owner's costs figure in.

What do you tip? Is there a percentage like in restaurants? Snarky responses are okay, btw. I'm sure I'll get some straightforward answers, too. :D

1. Depends upon how much the original service cost

Here is what I do:
a $13 haircut at one of the cheepo places usually nets a $2-3 tip
a $40 haircut at a higher priced salon nets $5

2. I would tip 20%. But, I'm a guy.

A woman has so many people do her hair...including the shampooer. Do you tip each person along the way? I believe you do.

3. As I understand it, you don't tip the owner.

4. My partner and I have our hair cut together, $30 total, $5 tip (20%)

The same guy does color, shampoo, cut and style.

Depending on the type and level of service.
