My Mom was found dead. I have to fly back to Boston. |
|
Grace C. Lenane, 72. She didnt answer her phone for 2 days, so my uncle checked on her and had to break down the door. She was dead of apparent natural causes. This lady was my hero. She held the family together during some bad shit over the course of the past 45 years. She was my "Rock". I have to fly back to Boston with my brother. I'm in San Diego, he's in San Jose. I'm still numb and it really hasnt hit me yet.

My late dad was B-polar, he died in 2000, my youngest brother was schizto and a herion adict who OD'd in 1996. She was glue that held our family together for all these years. My other brother and I have so much to do when we get back. There's the funeral, house, investments....so much that its overwhelming me right now.

She seemed ok but was a little down because my Dad's birthday was the 28th(today), he'd have been 75, and she was a bit lonely and depressed about that. She just failed her drivers test for renewal and wasnt too pleased about that either.

19. So sorry. SO SORRY. Some practical advice: |
|
Pack layers. It is very wet and rainy here. Temps have been all over the charts, it is trying hard to be spring, but it hasn't happened yet.
I know packing advice seems superfluous, but you've got a long road ahead of you in the grieving process, so you probably do not want to be freezing or unsuitably dressed on top of everything else.
Again, my deepest sympathies.

If you have a windbreaker or rain jacket, wear that as well. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. Here's a fast link to the wx for the week: http://www.intellicast.com/Local/USLocalStd.asp?loc=kbos&seg=LocalWeather&prodgrp=Forecasts&product=Forecast&prodnav=none Essentially, rain off and on, temps trying to hit 50, colder (in the high 30s) at night. No snow anticipated.

I am sorry to hear about your mom, I can't even imagine life without mine. I think you can be comforted in the fact that at least she did not have a long sustained suffering. It sounds like she passed peacefully, and that is a blessing.
You have a lot of responsibility right now, but allow yourself time to grieve and don't stress yourself out with all the legal crap.
I wish you solace in this time.

That numbness lingers a very long time--nature's way, I guess of helping us cope. Please understand that the grief may really hit hard much, much later and prepare for it if possible. Friends and family may be needed even more a year from now. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm sure you'll find that strength that she instilled in you--your final tribute to HER.

I cant sleep so I made coffee. Ma was the oldest child of Antonio and Nunciana Casticone, born in Lawrence MA 3/3/33 to a working-class Italian/American family. Her brother, John was born in 1935. She worked since the age of 10 while going through the public school system. One of her early jobs was working at the Lawrence Boys Club as a desk clerk, turning her whole paycheck over to my grandparents in support of the family. In 1950, at age 17 she graduated from Woodbury High School in Salem NH after her family left the urban plight on Lawrence for the new suburb. She met my dad there, an Irishman from a similar background, who's family also escaped Lawrence MA. They courted for 5 years before marrying in 1954. Ma & dad were the the first in either families to "break the ethnic bloodlines", much to the disdain of the families. They stay married for 46 years till Dad died in 2000. They said that it would never work out. They were wrong. Ma was one of the few working mothers during the 60's. She went to secretarial school and got a job as the secretary to the principal at Salem High School, NH. Six principals came and went but Ma hung on. She left the year I became a freshman at that school and went on to be the secretary to the president of the MFE Corp. One of the early developers of test equipment and the floppy disc. Later she moved up to Personnel administrator, a position she held for 12 years till downsizing occurred. After her lay-off she was a legal secretary till her eyesight and aneurysms forced her to retire in 1998. Ma knew her shit and got things done. The past 10 years Ma has been battling diabetes, depression and has had 3 brain aneurysms. Although she was ruled legally blind, she still drove around town. That scared the shit out of me and I often scolded her for doing so. She was tough and stubborn and kept driving up until last week when she failed her eye and driving test for renewal. This upset her greatly. I'll miss her great Italian cooking, wonderful advice and strength through times of crisis. Whenever I'd fly back east she would make me let her handle the itinerary arrangements. It would take her about 10 minutes to book a flight, shuttle/rental car, whatever.. Now I have to take care of the business that she would normally take care of. My brother and Uncle are both basket cases right now so I must adopt her inner strength and focus. This ain't gonna be easy.
Thank you all for hearing me out. Like I said I cant sleep so I might as well present a testament to "Ma".

Be sure to ask the airlines if they offer bereavement rates. They used to offer substantial discounts for people who were flying to deal with sudden family losses. Not sure if that's still done.
