What do you say about a loved one? |
|
Sigh...
I'm trying to write my speech for my grandfather's memorial service this weekend. I've started it half a dozen times now, only to start over. There's so much I want to say, and I just don't know how to do it right.

1. Do you have a memory of your grandfather . . . |
|
which stands head and shoulders above all the other memories of him? This could be a good springboard for explaining how and why your grandfather was (and still is) important in your life. (I'm sorry you've lost your grandfather, sir_captain.)

2. That's a hard one.. Don't make it a "speech".. Say what he meant to you |

You might break it into 3 parts.. when you were a child.. a young adult.. and now..
Everyone there will have their own memories of him, and yours will jog their memories of him..

or maybe you can express how an important part of him will live on through something he instilled in you.

Yeah, this is just so hard. We were very close. And I want to talk about that, but a) without getting too emotional in front of everyone and b) while getting that across but also saving the privacy of our relationship. Does that make any sense?

Maybe you shared a viewpoint or a cause, maybe one of his core values or virtues you admired that you hope to live by.

First, sorry to hear of your loss. Second, would it be so bad to get emotional in front of everyone? You have suffered a loss, people are OK if you express emotion. However, if you are still concerned, write out your speech and practice. The more you practice, the easier it will be to say without breaking up. As for sparing your privacy, that is OK, but perhaps you can spare a little of the privacy to show your love. It is not a requirement, but it is a personal touch. You will know what is best...just let it come to you!
I wish you the best. I don't even know you or him, but I have shed a a few tears for you both!
