He was rubbing his hands with glee when the AIDS epidemic began...when only gay men were diagnosed with this horrible disease.

I've lost my share of friends to AIDS over the decades. I will never, ever forgive that motherfucker for his casual disregard towards gay people, for fostering hateful attitudes in society that makes teenaged gay and lesbian kids to commit suicide, to show a complete indifference to hate crimes against gay people. Falwell is no different than Fred Phelps. He's just more diplomatic ahout it.

a bigot could have risen so high on America's radar that his death could elicit both sorrow and joy on a national basis.

In a more perfect world, such an uniformed bigot would have long ago been consigned to the sidelines of decent society.

In a more perfect world, his passing would have been noted with not much more than a footnote in his local gazette, with even that notice inspiring not much beyond inquiries of "who?"

In a more perfect world, we wouldn't have a lifetime of well-documented Neanderthal thinking sitting on the RW side of the ledger acting as offset to the free expression of thoughts that do nothing to advance the higher calling of the liberal ethic.
