And yet another "old enough to remember" thread - dual-needle pickups! |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 11:51 AM by Commie Pinko Dirtbag
Because, you know, 78 rpm records needed a thicker needle to play properly.
No shit. I HAD one of those at home when I was a kid. Of course, it was already a bizarre antique at that time, although I wasn't aware of that.

1. Wait a minute, I'm only in my thirties... |
|
yet we had a dual-needle record player. Granted, it was the one my mom grew up with, but we had one.

2. Yep, you used to "flip" the cartridge shell |
|
from one to the other.
You guys had 72 rpm records in Brazil?
We all had '78's. :)

and yes, I do. And it was NOT a bizarre antique. It was wondrous new technology.

That was back in the day when there was one record speed. Then, we got modern and had three -- 33-1/3, 45 and 78. Then stereophonic sound came out and we went backward to two, 45 and 33-1/2. At first, half the albums were labeled MONO and half STEREOPHONIC. Then we went all stereophonic, and shortened the word to just stereo. That also became the name of the device to play them, "the stereo."
Now, we've abandoned the technology altogether. Except for some of us, who realize that a lot of music that was on vinyl didn't make it to those "best of" CDs.
It is really hard to get good quality record needles for my Marantz turntable these days, but I do manage to find them still! And even though I had to buy an adapter to get the magnetic pickup to play on my new receiver (which no longer has a PHONO input!), I got it working.
