ZeeDub's Badass Jazz CD of the Night
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 11:12 PM by ZombyWoof
McCoy Tyner - 'The Real McCoy'.

It is badass, I say. Bad. Ass. With Elvin Jones and Joe Henderson, no less.

Discuss.

1. You mention Elvin Jones.
Where is the respect for Joe?

This, to me, is a Joe Henderson CD.

It fucking rocks.

Did you ever pick up the Chesky CD from the early 90s called NY Reunion?

Which?
The Real McCoy? Classic Blue Note. An essential. You get Ron Carter on bass too.

The NY Reunion CD is good, but it doesn't have the warmth of a mid 60s Blue Note record. And it's got Al Foster on drums instead of Elvin. Rest of the personnel is the same though.

9. wow - very nice!
I loves me my Joe Henderson.
Even though he sat in the back seat of my car when I picked him up at the airport....as if I was just some limo service!

10. Just the fact you had that chance
Is too cool. The closest I came to meeting any jazz musician was when I made Tain laugh. It was a comment about his stocking feet when he plays drums... he kicks off his shoes before playing! :-)

14. I met almost all of my heroes, but I started early.
I was 15 when I started hanging out at the jazz festivals. This was 1987, so I got to rub elbows with so many greats, man of whom have since left us:

Ella
Diz
Miles
MJQ
Stan Getz
Joe Henderson
Sonny Rollins
Carmen McRae
Sarah Vaughan
Slim Gaillard
Art Blakey
Herbie Hancock
Eddie Harris
Roy Haynes
Randy Weston
Betty Carter

and on and on and on and on

2. I'll have to check that out.
MY badass jazz CDs for tonight: Ellington, Mingus & Roach - "Money Jungle"; and Monk's "Straight, No Chaser".

5. Monk!
Yes, I LOVE 'Straight, No Chaser'. Same year as 'The Real McCoy' too, now that you mention it.

Love Mingus. His 'New Tijuana Moods' is my Badass Jazz CD for another night.

2 of my favorite CDs. Well - I do have a ridiculously long list of faves.

Fleurette Africaine - beautiful.

8. One of my favourite Ellington compositions...
and the version of "Caravan" on this CD is totally kickass, too. First time I heard it, I was amazed. Ellington is surprisingly harmonically modern, compared to the rest of his work...close your eyes, and you could almost swear it's Thelonious you're listening to.

And I really dig the tension going on between Ellington and Mingus...it resolves beautifully.

Milt Jackson Quartet on Prestige from 1955

Horace Silver
Percy Heath
Connie Kay

Basically, the MJQ with Horace Silver in for John Lewis. Interesting. This is my first time listening to it.

12. Have to check that one out, too.
I was listening to Art Blakey's "A Night At Birdland" the other night, with Horace Silver on piano...damn. One of the best live recordings I've heard. Right up there with Ellington at Newport.

13. I missed seeing Blakey by one day
He was scheduled to play at Bumbershoot in Seattle, and was hospitalized the day before the show. Can't remember who filled in for him, but Dr. John came in at the last minute and rounded out the band.

Art died soon after. :-(

I missed out on what turned out to be my last chance to see Nina Simone, too :( Made me resolve not to miss an opportunity to see one of the greats when I can...

19. Yes!
Bumbershoot is always Labor Day weekend. I remember when he died because I just started attending a new college that quarter. So it was 6 weeks or so after the fill-in band. I just know I was bummed that he cancelled his appearance at the last minute.

Dizzy played his last gig in Seattle, and I am sorry I missed that.

20. I got a little friendly with Arturo in NY
A story. Saw Blakey group at Grant's Tomb Jazzmobile. Ran into Arthur Taylor and Charlie Persip, both of whom I knew. I sat between them on the running board of the group's van right behind the bandstand. We all watched Blakey's foot work. One of the community people came over to us to tell us to stop passing the joint around because there were young folks in the audience.

24. No. He was a favorite person of mine.
Always stopped to talk when I saw him on the street. First time I saw him Lee Morgan and Gary Bartz were in the group. Last time, Branford and Bobby Watson.

Gotta link?

21. One of Blakey's final records was with Dr John
It was called Bluesiana Triangle, and the third "angle" was David Fathead Newman.

Art sings on the record - For All We Know. Really pulls at your heartstrings to think he died weeks after the record was released.

18. My jazz addict friend back in Seattle...
Would love you... Bags is his god! I love him myself, but only have a scant few recordings, my favorite being a collaboration with Wes Montgomery called "Bags Meets Wes". Or his "Bags Groove" recording with Miles from the Prestige era. Can't decide, and you won't make me, lol. I do have a Modern Jazz Quartet CD recorded live with Sonny Rollins (still going strong, isn't he?).

Though it has been awhile since we have heard a new album from him.
