1. You didn't turn off that Madonna picture?
I think she's a fair actress, but that beachy castaway-ish film Guy directed her in was AWFFFFULLLLLLLLL.

Oh my god, it was awful. The original was terrible, I can't imagine what possessed them to redo it.

I can't get those minutes back, you know.

3. the original
at least was "original." Wertmuller is kind of an acquired taste, though.

16. Really? That's surprising.
Considering the slapping, etc. of the woman that takes place.

But, the woman was abusing the man in certain ways as well...hmm.

13. I used to have a thing for her films
fascinatingly weird. And there were no other female Italian directors at that time that I knew about.

4. The original made sense. Prisoners play football not soccer.
It also made a political statement at the end when the Warden (Eddie Albert) tried to have Burt Reynolds assinated and the guard refused. Little Marxism there.

5. I think we're talking about different films...
I'm pretty sure Burt wasn't in the Madonna film...I don't think!

8. "Swept Away" & "The Longest Yard"
the madonna/ritchie remake of wertmuller's classic was god-awful.

i can't comment on "mean machine"- but isn't adam sandler doing a remake of "the Longest Yard"..?- that'll be a definite stink-fest.

12. Any remake of the original will stink beyond words!
The original stunk but it had a certain charm and anti authority stance that was just great (it's a Hud rip-off). Gawd, Adam Sandler in that role. :puke:

14. possible first use of the phrase "there it is"...?
in The Longest Yard, when burt & the caretaker approach the black players about playing, one of them responds something to the effect of 'we could play, but we won't play', and then another chimes in "There it is..." as in what would later become 'whoop...there it is'. I think it's the earliest use i remember of the phrase.

11. Unclear reference to the original "Mean Machine" aka "The Longest Yard"

“Based on the movie of the same name released all the way back in 1974 starring Burt Reynolds. That movie saw inmates challenge wardens to a game of American football over in the States. This time, the action is relocated to the UK and the game is soccer. And who better to take the Burt Reynolds role, ex-Wimbledon and Wales footballer, Vinnie Jones”

It never helps when I'm obscure about an obscure film! :hi:

17. Haven't seen Mean Machine, but Swept Away was fucking horrible
Lousy Guy picking film projects with his dick instead of his brain.
