Oasis is not popular
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 12:50 PM by progmom
My day job gives me access to national sales numbers for CDs at one of those mammoth chains that sells a ton of music. This whole Oasis thing got me curious, so I looked up the numbers.

Only one Oasis record is selling enough to qualify to continue to be stocked in all of the stores.

Every original Beatles album sells very well and is stocked in every store.

The best-selling Beatles album sells 6.3X better than the best-selling Oasis album.

That is all.

15. I buy jazz and world music
I think I got lucky, living in the town where this chain is based. But I did have 6 years of music retail experience and 5 years of radio experience when I got hired.

Most of the people I know in the music industry spent at least some time working in a record store.

I started off my career in this chain buying hip hop and gospel, btw.

9. I wouldn't expect them to stock Oasis albums at truck stops.
It's almost all country music, and some comedians like Jeff Foxworthy.

stores that sell music. Get it? They are only popular in your head.

13. They sell music, CBs, t-shirts with wolves on them...
...basically everything a trucker would want on the road. And I doubt many of them would pick up an Oasis album, so I'm actually surprised they stock one.

17. Read the original post again, please.
She's talking about the major CHAINS that sell music. Since when is Billy Bob's Taxidermy, T-Shirt and Music Store considered a major chain?

23. I wouldn't be bragging about WalMart
WalMart's statistics are as skewed to rednecks and freepers as truck stops'are. I wouldn't expect you WalMart groupies to like Oasis. Someone told you that the Beatles were good and you hurried down to WalMart to buy their CD.

That's funny.

You found me out. I am the jazz and world music buyer for Walmart.

And I am a WalMart groupie. How did you know? :sarcasm:

on edit - my only regret is that Mr. Sam died before I could sleep with him.

25. Whoa! Where in the world do you get the idea that I shop at
Walmart and that that is the major chain we are discussing? You are wrong on both counts. And no one told me the Beatles were good - I don't even own a Beatles CD, let alone one that came from Walmart.

I resent being called a Walmart groupie, btw. It's insulting.

28. You're absolutely right.
Luckily, the chain I buy for has a clientele whose music taste runs a little more toward the sophisticated side. We're certainly skewing more pop than we did when I first started here 9 years ago, but it's still refreshing that 8% of our sales come from jazz records (as opposed to the national average of around 2%).

personally, I consider myself lucky to live in an area with several good independent record stores, and decent non-commercial radio...otherwise I'd never listen to the radi and probably do all my music shopping online.

I (and you, progmom) are not among their numbers.

Oasis=shitty Charlatans UK ripoffs, who themselves were shitty Happy Mondays ripoffs. Plus all their songs are too slow and have the same beat.
