How do you deal with stress?
Since these seem to be stressful times for many of us.

For me, unfortunately I smoke. Not to mention the occasional beer binge.

Last summer, when I lost the last woman I was seriously involved with, I spent months driving around New England taking pictures, trying to forget...

So how about you? What's you classic stress relief?

I really have to try and quite soon but, it seems like I've been smoking more and more each day...

But caffeine is usually good.

44. I would LOVE to kick my neighbor too!!
He has no license to drive for the REST of his life yet he continues to get drunk and drive. The man can be so drunk that he has to crawl to his car but he gets and and drives perfectly. He just got busted again 2 weeks back so he will be good to more. And when I see him get in that car I'll call the cop until they get tired of it and send him to the penitentiary. He must have one good lawyer if that were me I'd be under the jail. Of course that is only a small part of his shunanigans. He causes plenty of trouble around here, another good reason to keep him in jail. My sympathy to you, I have that problem a crossed the street, but at least they dont drink till they are to drunk to walk and drive on the sssame hi way my kid is coming home on geeeeeeess

8. Exercise.
If I just want to burn off ordinary stress, I work up a good sweat. If I'm feeling angry or very frustrated, lifting weights while listening to Led Zeppelin or AC/DC or Def Leppard helps.

And sometimes, a nice relaxing glass of wine is just the ticket.

18. My BIG thing
when dealing with stressful situations while I am IN the situation is to think about how nice it will be when I get home and my head hits the pillow. I imagine myself finally finished with the stressful situation. This especially works when the situation seems to be lasting forever and taking all day long.

If I'm still stressed when I get home, however, I do something else. I can't say it directly without getting your thread locked or getting my post deleted, I'm afraid. Let's just say I'm an expert fisherman.

Lay on my back on the floor arms stretched, palms up, and sing along.

It's usually goes away by the time "Green Grow the Rushes" is playing and definitely gone by "Wendell Gee" which mellows me out.

22. Depends on the kind of stress
If it's emotional stress or pain, it tends to come out in the form of shaking (anxiety-type) and stomachache, and I stop eating, pretty much. If it's just need-to-get-stuff-done stress or work stress, usually, I can up my energy for a while to get a bunch done, and crash later with a glass of wine and some time on DU, or reading, or hanging out with my husband... all good things! :)

26. walk, write poetry, listen to music but it depends on the type of stress-
For academic: I try to avoid drinking when I'm stressed; but I'll smoke when it gets really hectic.
For emotional stress: I write. A lot. Poetry. Go for a walk. Listen to soothing music.
I have an overactive mind and if I get in a loop related to emotional stress- esp. now when I'm still in grief over the shit that happened to the one I love last month- and it sucks =(

35. gardening or playing with my cat
Either one does it for me in no time. When I'm stressed out I get TMJ attacks. They are the nastiest thing known to all of humankind.

When that happens, I just go out to my garden and putter around. Pretty soon I'm busy with some project and I've entirely forgotten what I was stressed out about.

Same thing goes for hanging out with a kitty. They have a way of doing goofy things that make me laugh. Like Greenlee, for example, will crawl under a blanket and then walk with the blanket on her like she's a ghost.

If I have time, a long hot soak in the tub, or I put on some old Motown and whip up something tastey in the kitchen.

A most excellent stress release is to phone someone special, or a longtime friend and just vent, talk, giggle or cry until unwinding is acheived.

Forgot to mention writing. An exercise I call "writing down to the bones" where I just write (or type) every thought that fills my head as fast as I can. Most of it is crap in terms of literary value, but some really good emotional revelations always come of it.

47. I isolate...
When I'm at my most stressed, I avoid most other humans (very few people do I like to show much of myself to because most people I have found are ultimately not very trustworthy which is why I sometimes can understand when people I care about end up doing the same thing). Then I tend to do projects of some sort. A few years ago, right before all my marriage stress finally made me crumble like a pile of jello, I refinished floors, painted walls, refinished furniture, and all kinds of artsy crafty stuff. I'm a keep-myself-busy kind of person. Like I said on another thread, I don't smoke, don't drink much, don't eat too much, or gamble, so I read lots, do lots of projects, or find other more "special" ways to relieve stress. It works anyway.
