Why the Pope has always given me a headache (funny story)
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 10:08 PM by bleedingheart
First I want to point out that my mother is 100% Lithuanian, born here in the US, but she speaks, reads, and writes it....and my entire childhood I was immersed in Lithuanian culture and music..etc.

So when John Paul was elected Pope...my mom was estatic...because...his mother was of Lithuanian descent....but that was the last time...

You see the media portrayed him as the Polish Pope...and my mom had inherited from her family a disdain for all things Polish....all due in part to the historic squabbles between the two countries....

So every time the Pope would be on TV...my mother would get crazy and start yelling at the TV..."he is Lithuanian too!!!"...at first it seems funny...but spend over 25 years hearing about it...and it gives you a headache...

I would be with her in the grocery story and she would get into it with perfect strangers who called him the Polish Pope...and my nephews as they got older would bring it up to just yank her chain.....

So for many different reasons I will miss him and I wish him well on his next journey...

edit: my bad spelling
