Bush finally admits to dodging National Guard service

In his weekly radio address, President George W. Bush apologized to the nation for "shirking my responsibilities in the Texas Air National Guard". Bush said that he realized he was a sub-rate pilot and feared he would likely be shot down, just as his father was in World War II.

Recounting his experiences, the elder Bush said in 1987, "I was shot down, and I was floating around in a little yellow raft setting a record for paddling. I thought of my family, my mom and dad, and the strength I got from them. I thought of my faith, the separation of church and state."

It appears that having failed to go to Vietnam and get shot out of the sky, the younger Bush failed to learn the all-important lesson of separation of church and state.
