Can I get a count of who's coming to Boston for the April 23rd Gathering?
I am going to look into bars that can accommodate a large number of people and have food, but I may have to reserve a separate room so that we don't overwhelm them. I wanted to give them a heads up so they can schedule extra bar staff-matcom should have his own dedicated bartender anyway! :P

So, if I can get an idea by Wednesday preferably who is DEFINITELY coming, that would be fantastic! Thanks!

:toast:  :bounce: :toast:  :bounce: :toast:  :bounce: :toast:  :bounce: :toast:  :bounce:

Please help keep kicked for the next few days!

6. Yes. Taking a couple days vacation and cashing in some FF miles
I haven't been to Boston since I was in the military (I travel quite alot but never seem to get there). Seemed like a good enough reason to go.

Although April is hectic, Toronto, Kansas City (twice), and Iowa all on the board for the month.

Thanks for relaying me score updates while I was working today, it made missing opening day for the first time in I dont know when more comforting. Not only did we win, we shut em out. So hopefully, the pitching in particular the starting pitching will be ok, if we get that, well as someone said, watch out.

Kathy, I'd suggest someplace maybe a little more relaxed and inexpensive than the Tavern, if you can find someplace big enough to fit all of us...

What's planned besides hangin' out at the bar/hotel? (Not that that's not cool by itself, mind you :) Just wondering what else might be going on!)

Most things are quite expensive in Boston, sad to say. Tavern is actually average. The only inexpensive places are chain restaurants like Friday's-and they're not even cheap.

It has to be near the subway for people so we're looking around Back Bay or Cambridge.

I don't know how much the drinks were, because I was drinking ginger ale, but it couldn't be worse than most of the other bar around. Or even the Black Rose, which has a private area and is centrally located.

169. bubblegum satin, w/ poofy sleeves and a bustle.....
true story, my evil twin cousin's wedding:
the groomsmen were all telling how dumb is the bride stories (i.e.: his bachelor party was a week in vegas-- he promised her whoring was ilegal IN vegas! tee hee) i get a little disgusted and saddle up to the bar for a whiskey, i turn my back to talk to someone, and i feel a wet splash on my bare back. it was the bartender coyly letting me know the whiskey has arrived by flicking some of it on me. cute little old man. i down it anyway and ask for another w/ no fingers. he obliges and tells me i look ten times better than the bride. i'm kinda getting in the spirit and say," well, who doesn't?" and of course it's then i notice the bride has sidled on up next to me. and she heard it.
before the night is over, we all go out to a club, the bridesmaid who is the grooms ex startsgrinding her ass into said groom's crotch the moment the bride turns around (and yes, they are wearing matching hub and wife sweatshirts at this point) we all watch this for a whole song, while the bride is happily yapping to a friend.... while i'm dancing, my skirt gets ripped off and everyone gets to see my best undergear for two seconds (at least i was strobe lit) my matching purse gets stolen (okay...lost) and an old friend comes over and says hey, the bouncers are all over your date outside because he punched a woman, so lets forget the card game and no i'm not taking y'all back to the hotel like i promised, bye. oh well, it was ten minutes before closing, i would have punched her too after i heard what happened, and my date had cabfare. so it was cool. i was getting sick of that side of the family anyway. really. i think subconciously i planned it all. plus, i did look ten times better than the bride.

170. I HAD one of those dresses, except it was 'dusty rose'
Horror colour of the 80's.

Your stories are so much fun. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of your life for a week or two.

My bridesmaid stories aren't nearly as good. One friend realized during the reception that she didn't have her suitcase at the hotel. She didn't have so much as a toothbrush with her. She asked me to go to her parents house and get her bag, which I did.

I tentatively knocked on the door of the bridal suite (did I mention they had waited for the big night.) The groom answered, shushed me and dragged me into the room. The bride was flaked out across the bed, just a huge heap of satin and lace. For the record, they waited one more day. lol

the great thing with my cousins wedding was that my cousin had been such a heinous user wild man asshole all his life that he couldn't call me on any of it. and none of it was intentional. (conciously) LOL. in his world, it was all just another saturday night. ay yay yay. now that i think about it, we took the bride's little brother back to the hotel with us.
we got him stoned and he seemed to be flirting with both of us. we were quite confused. he left his silver bracelet and when i returned it to miss newlywed at thanksgiving she loudly told some crazy lie about how i had come into it's possession. i had to laugh. no way your little brother was in my room, ms bride in matching sweatshirts and babeball hats. i'll have to ask after him next time i see her. just to keep her on her toes.

I was waiting til the venue solidified. I will probably make arrangements by Friday one way or another (and I will make sure it has two double beds for any spares needing a place to crash).

More than likely it will be in the Cambridge area.

I was planning to rent a car. Should I just skip that and take the "T" everywhere? It's been a long time since I've been to Boston and I remember that driving was an adventure.

Edited: I should probably find a word other than spare. I just mean any individuals that would be better off staying in the city even though they had not planned to do so.

:scared:

INSANE drivers!

Parking is non-existent and parking garages are like $40/day at least.

Subway and taxis are your best bet, unless you plan to drive out to the 'burbs. :-)

I live in Cambridge, so if you need any suggestions on hotels there. let me know (I would suggest the Hotel@MIT if you can get a bargain room).

I'm leaving early, parking the car at Riverside, and spending most of the day in town. It's cheaper that way, and I get to wander whereever I want. (I'll probably be exhausted, but as long as I have a stool and a glass of water, I'll be fine!)

46. Sadly for me.....i will not be able to attend after all.
I'm smack dab in the middle of my busy season at work, crazy hours and I'm headed to Mexico only a week later. The Bosshole didn't exactly say "no", but I'm certain it would be trouble.

I'm definitely hoping to make the next gathering. Raise a pint for me!

93. I'm totally bummed, but traveling every weekend in May and early June.
My dog won't know me anymore.

Are they going back to work on "The Dig?" I vowed that I would never return to Boston until it was done. Every single time I left my hotel the roads had changed. As if driving in Boston wasn't stressful enough, throw in the ever changing lanes and you get instant tourist road rage. Actually, probably more like the freeway scene from Clueless, but oh well.

Anyway, I read they were having problems with the tunnel these days.

Oh yea...Ben Franklin ripped me off in the Boston Common area. We took a pic and as my friend snanpped the photo he said quietly through his teeth, "that'll be $5." Needless to say, when we got the pics I'm standing next to a lovely, smiling Ben Franklin and my head is cocked looking at him with a "are you f***ing kidding me?" look on my face.

Other than that, I've really enjoyed visiting Boston.

There's a contingent of people who've never met my wife who think I invented her. I should ask her to make an appearance and put a stop to all that!

you may get lucky, but dive bars tend to be a better bet.

be in July or maybe August? Then I could come! Esp. August. My husband and I will be returning from our Mediterranean cruise in July and that might be a bit much...I'll just have to see how the timing is. I can believe you guys have fun! All these threads are fun.
Thanks for the info...

176. I've just had a place recommended to me for the gathering
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 09:32 AM by DS1
I'm in class talking to a girl sitting next to me about this huge event - knowing she works at a bar, well, it's more of a lounge really.

http://www.luckyslounge.com/events.html

The lounge can be reserved for parties, and there's 2 bars available.

I poked around on the website, and the food looks pricey, but I'm quite certain that there'd be other options in the area. It's on Congress St., within walking distance of South Station.

Anyway, it's an idea - there's two pics of the place on the link I put up.
