Poll question: Best narrator for documentaries
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 02:39 AM by undisclosedlocation
Mainly referring to the ones made for TV, but if you have a jones for somebody else, I'll listen. For instance, I put on Moore; though he doesn't have the most mellifluous voice, he does an outstanding job on the voiceovers for his films.

For some reason it causes me great amusement that the narrators on space documentaries are almost always from Star Trek. Shatner does an especially outstanding job, by the way. Of the non-Trek space narrators, John Hurt also gets the odd gig, probably because of Alien.

I know there are a lot of outstanding voice artists who do only narration, but I don't know their names and I'm betting that DUers are even less likely to know them (me being a meganerd and all). If you do know some, feel free to chirp up, though.

If you feel strongly about somebody, yell and jump up and down (or, I don't know, post below) and I'll add them if I don't do the more sensible thing and go the hell to sleep.

Threw in Attenborough since I worship him as a god; I have a shrewd notion I don't need to worry about being buried in seconding notions.

First edit: John Goodman replaced by Peter Coyote

Edit 2: Nimoy bites the dust due to advancing speech impediment, replaced by Sarandon

Edit 3: Sorry Michael Dorn; bad night for non-captains from Trek. (Heck, Frakes didn't even make the original poll.) Replaced by Will Lyman from Frontline.

1. I had to go with Attenborough because I love nature documentaries.
I love all documentaries, but nature does it for me. :)

I think I'm going to start using Netflix and order massive amounts of documentaries. :) I don't have cable or DISH. I haven't turned on a TV since September. I wonder if mine still works. ;)

15. Alda hosted and participated in a science series on PBS for a while
Maybe he still does. It was kind of gee whiz stuff (not a criticism), but I couldn't so much call it narration. Haven't heard him do much else; nice friendly voice though, of course.

16. We must be soul brothers. Before Wood, there was a guy working
more or less the same side of the street named David Drew doing a show called Footsteps or Footsteps of Man depending what side of the Atlantic you were on. Got me hooked on archaeology for years. Apparently he's been writing books more recently: http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/4836-0/author-David-Drew.htm

30. Scourby was the best
You can listen to his reading of the Bible here:

I also liked Jacob Bronowski (The Ascent of Man) who had an intrusive "W" that, surprisingly, wasn't annoying.
