Why is Baseball the only one of the Big 3 where the scoring makes sense?
Think about it:

In Baseball: 1 man crossing the plate = 1 run

In Football: 1 touchdown = 6 points

In Basketball: 1 field goal = 2 points

Why?

1. Because making sense is undervalued.

2. simply put, baseball is the sport of the gods
It is THE sport. None come close. None. Pure poetry in motion.
Nothing is more graceful than a 5-4-3 DP...mmm.

3. And don't forget, that in football, if you get the ball across the line,
you get a free try for either 1 point or 2 points.

Or, you can kick the ball for 3 points.

And if you pull a safety, it's 2 points.

And basketball also has the 3 point throw, and the 1 point free throw.

And not just baseball - but also hockey and soccer. One goal = one point. No free tries for extra points, no points for fouls, no extra bonus points for being far away when you shoot.

4. Hockey does allow for a penalty shot, though.

12. But Soccer's so low scoring!
:sarcasm:

Seriously though, maybe if MLS made every goal worth 10 points, Americans would start liking soccer.

17. People who bitch about 'low scoring' piss me off
That's precisely what makes basketball such a piece of shit sport. Too much scoring. It's not interesting at all.

Not to me, anyway. Obviously, it is to others.

13. The best moment in sports is when a Penalty shot is given in the NHL-
playoffs IMHO.

In world cup soccer it isn't as exciting because the goalie doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell.

5. In basketball, it is because free throws are worth 1
and a field goal has to be more than that.

I'm not a big sports fan, but I like basketball. It is the most elegant. No cumbersome equipment, the same people play offense and defense, a fast pace, and the ball is big enough for me to follow it.

6. Because...
In football and basketball, you have different ways to score, and strategy/probability comes into play.

It would be less exciting for football if touchdowns were 4 points, field goals 3 (as they are), safeties 2 (as they are), and extra point kicks.

That 6 points gives some distance between the 4 it could have been given and the 6 it has. Determines strategy, mathematical odds, game-making plays, etc.

It does make sense. You just have to consider the variety of scores that can be done.

Basketball has a 3-point zone and of course, single points for foul shots for much the same reason. Very elegant when you think about it.

They all makes sense. You don't want to compare apples and tangerines.

9. But if you get fouled while trying to make one, two-point shot
You have to make two one-point shots.

It rather seems that it's penalizing the player who was fouled by forcing him to take double, or triple the number of shots that he was initially trying for.

18. The player taking those shots is unopposed.
It is just him, the ball, and the goal. It is all in his hands. He can not pass it off to someone else.

8. There are single points in football and basketball, though
A kicked conversion is one point--would you have it be 1/6 of a point? Same for basketball--would a single free throw be 1/2 a point? If touchdowns are harder to achieve than field goals, they need to be worth more points, or no one would bother to attempt a touchdown. It makes perfect sense to me.

10. I would dispute that touchdowns are harder to make than field goals
How many players on a team are capable of scoring a touchdown?

How many are capable of making a 50 yard field goal?

16. Yes! Let's go to decimal points!!
Packers won against the Vikings, 2.266 to 1.322

I love it!!

Imagine John Madden, "Theyr'e zero point zero eight three points behind, and it looks like they're gonna go for the zero point one six six point conversion on this one!"

15. Baseball is the only sport in America that's the most simular to soccer
Professional soccer teams in europe there fans get tatoos of the team logo as a point of pride of where there from. I see the Detroit Tigers "D" tatoos on people from Detroit all the time.
