Now I understand why people leave Du.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 04:10 AM by HEyHEY
I come home, check a few posts to discover what a bastard I am for using the word "Chick" a word my sisters and mother use to describe women. To me it's just as harmless as "guy"

Then I see I'm also a bastard for making a comment that Affleck's sexual life my hurt him in future elections. These people think it won't because they are fucking morons. But no I'm the fucking prick here. I see now why people get pissed at DU sometimes...some people are too much to take, fucking over-idealistic gits.

Fuck them....I'm going to bed, things better be different tomorrow.

Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 04:15 AM by REP
And I'm a chick.

Sometimes the spelling - not typos - but crappy spelling, horrible grammar, plurals formed with apostrophes, mangled syntax and general "where the fuck did you go to school"-ness of the posts makes me want to storm off in a huff, but I never do.

Edit - typo

2. This is the internet.
No offense, Mr/Mrs/Ms HeyHey, but the internet is full of socially awkward fuckwits that would get punched in the face if they acted the same way in real society as they did online. Intellectual arrogance, poo-pooing other's personal tastes and personal cheap shots are the norm here. Not to be too hard on you, but if you want to get along in a place that gets as much traffic as DU goes, I suggest you develop both a thicker skin and a healthy "most people here can go fuck themselves" attitude.

Works for me...

You miserable wretches!

This place is no worse than any other message forum on the internet. At least one can swear if one feels the need, as you clearly did. Now, wasn't that liberating? There are an awful lot of people using this forum and chances are most of them are decent and tolerant.

6. Awww. HEyHEY! Don't leave. Some people..
take themselves waaaaaaaay to seriously. It's unavoidable on a site this size. While I don't like being referred to as a chick personally, because I'm a grandmother and hardly a spring chicken - It doesn't offend me if girls are referred to as chicks. Ignor the criticisms. They are free to express their displeasure and you are free to ignor it.

Besides:

Just was pissed off is all.

People say don't sweat the small stuff...BUT IT'S THE SMALL STUFF THAT REALLY PISSES ME OFF!

I mean, if I can't express an opinion without worrying about what words I use to that degree, I get frustrated.

8. Live and let live

Don't be thin-skinned, let other people be right 50% of the time (even when they may not be), don't argue stuff not worth arguing, and you'll be fine. Know your audience, let them have their say and talk about themselves. Remember that a bore is a person who succeeds in talking about him/herself when you want to talk about yourself....

Consider that you may be mistaken. (An 'advice' that Quaker elders give their wrongheaded zealots.)

Illegitimis non carborundum. (Don't let the bastards grind you down.) (a British pseudoLatin phrase originating in the military bureaucracy during WW2)

Living well is the best revenge. (It is.)

9. Here's what I do
Repeat after me: "Big tent. Big tent. Big tent."

And there's also "ignore!" I put someone on "ignore" for the first time a week or two ago and saw the first post which the software "ignored" for me the other day. Brought a little smile to my face, thinking how easily it was to banish that annoyance.

10. Not only here, but in general,
people in our time are too ready to take offense when none is intended. Stereotypes are bad, but it is possible to overreact, and overreaction seems to be the rule. So, maybe you think that's a redneck opinion. You would be right: I grew up in the south and my skin hue is light enough that I can get a really bad sunburn when I am out in the southern sun, especially if I wear light clothing that exposes my neck. (That's one reason I usually wear a "bubba cap" when I am outside.) Call me what you will. What you call me is not what I am.

Ignore all the politically correct thought police. I long ago decided that if there was a problem with the words and thoughts I used in a post, it would not be my problem. I will say what I want, how I want, when and where I want, and if it offends some weak-spirited soul they can just crawl back under the floorboards under their beds where it's safe (right after they kiss my ass).

It's a rough place out in the real world, where people have independent thoughts at times, and are wont to express them. This concept frightens people who are used to controlling and maniuplating those around them, but are unable to do so in a forum such as this.

Joke 'em if they can't take a screw!

14. Hang in there, HeyHey. Savvy DUers are able to figure out when no harm is
intended. I used to teach HS English, and I refrain from criticizing other's grammar and spelling, unless they happen to be pissing me off in GDF, of course.

There are way too many who cannot differentiate between formal expression and the conversation that occurs here. They clearly are lacking in their English education, no matter what they want you to believe.

And, I would rather be called a "chic" than a guy anytime. I refer to my hubby and his friends as "guys," I refer to my friends as the "grrlz," but an occasional "chick" slips out.

Context, people, CONTEXT!

Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 11:28 AM by Cheswick
it is always their fault for being too sensitive or idealistic? Why not read and consider what these women are saying to you? From reading your posts I would say you might actually have some sensitivity training to do on "women's issues".

There are good reasons many women don't like the term "chick". Do you have any idea what those reasons are? If not, do yourself a favor and find out.

If you can't do that then at least don't complain. As NB says, don't sweat the small stuff.

23. One word. Ignore.
This site has changed a lot. It used to be a great place to keep up with the news, get educated and occasionally exchange comments with like-minded folks. Now it's a playground for nincompoops with no social skills who come here to work off the aggression they have to keep hidden in the real world for fear of getting their butts kicked on a daily basis. Here, they can pretend that they're not really impotent losers. They're easy to get rid of though. One click and they're consigned to internet limbo.

26. a bit of an exaggeration
one person asked about you using the word chick. Her exact words were "want century do you hail from."

The other part was not about whether Ben's sex life may hurt him in the future. It was about you using tabloid news to say Ben performed oral sex on a stripper in Vancouver. When asked to back up your claim your source was a friend who met the stripper.

This is a message board. People will challenge your opinions.

28. Let's look at the context.
HEyHEY comes home at two in the morning, probably after a pretty good carouse in Vancouver, signs on to the board and posts a mini-rant at some percieved slam. Who hasn't felt that way at some time and said something they didn't mean? HEy HEY is a good guy and he will be back and I am sure we will all be glad to have him here. Big tent indeed.

The problem is that things we use in common vernacular when talking amongst friends translate differently on a message board where people have no insight into the kind of person who posted the jargon.

30. Prick is a compliment
According to a dear friend of mine from Mexico, one should never refer to man as a prick attempting to insult because, "that's the best part of a man". So...his machismo is showing, but it has the ring of truth. Different cultures, differnt views.
