Has anyone seen "Second Hand Lions?" Is it any good? |
|
I need a movie tonight, not heavy. Have seen Pirates and Tuscan Sun. That's all that's left I can deal with right now.

1. Be forewarned: it's a family film |
|
And therefore sweet and sentimental. But my husband and I loved it; Caine and Duval are wonderful as usual. Fun premise, great time. The audience actually applauded once the closing credits came on.

2. Family, sweet and sentimental. Sounds really good, thanks! |

Just what I was looking for. Was afraid it might be cynical and cruel, or smarmy.

7. Light, but SOLID entertainment. |

Don't believe what the critics are saying about it, ESPECIALLY the criticism leveled at Haley Joel Osment. This is about as good as it gets for kids his age looking to stay in the game between puberty and adulthood. My assessment is, the role wasn't as challenging as many he has played in the past - like Roger Clemens pitching Class A ball. The primo parts were those given to Michael Caine and Robert Duvall. Haley's character mostly sat there drinking root beer or whatever. In short, they wanted a gawky young teenager, and they got one, cracking voice and all.

4. I thought it was great! |

I loved the crusty old guys. They reminded me of my crusty old self. Good no stress movie. No profound message, no excess violence or sex, just good clean fun. Nice change from the daily news.

5. Illustrations by Berke Brethed |
|
One of the characters is a cartoonist, and you see snippets of his work. Illustrations by Berke Brethed of Bloom County fame. Woo-hoo!
I took my daughter to see it and we both liked it. She's 12, and used to want to marry Harry Potter (she has a thing for British accents), but has shifted her sights to Haley Joel Osment. He's becoming quite a cutie pie.
I agree with the other posters--Duvall and Caine are awesome. The flashback sequences are terrific. It's a kind of fairy tale. Good escapism.
If you want to REALLY escape, go see "Kill Bill." :)
