22. Politically correct correction: *women* can become lawyers.
In law offices, one doesn't *dare* refer to female lawyers, paralegals and legal secretaries as "girls". The penalty could be castration, figuratively or literaly. ::gasp::

107. OldLeftie, another question for ya...
I worked as a legal secretary/paralegal from 1975 until 2000. When I was first learning the ropes, I was told that the term "Esq." was reserved for men because it had a similar meaning to "Mr." only used for lawyers. So I always would address letters to male lawyers, Tom Foolery, Esq. or female lawyers, Old Leftie Lawyer, Attorney at Law. Later, a lot of the new baby girl lawyers would become very adamant and upset insisting that they be addressed as "Esq." also, which to me was always like saying "Mr. Girl Lawyer," which didn't make any sense at all. Am I too old school? I don't have to worry about this anymore because now I type court transcripts at home and don't have to deal with lawyers of ANY gender anymore, but what are your thoughts on this burning issue?

110. You were told wrong
The term is used, here in the States, to denote an attorney. A member of the bar in good standing. A lawyer.

Anyone who told you differently misled you. But, given the time - 1975 - that you were starting out in the legal field, I'm not surprised. Male lawyers were zealously guarding everything from female law students (I got my JD that year) such as I. And they were right, because we systematically took it all away from them and made it available for everyone.

I am, regardless of my gender, OldLeftieLawyer, Esquire.

However, I can never use it myself, because it is considered bad form. That is, I could never sign a letter as "OldLefieLawyer, Esquire."

It is only meant to be used when addressing a member of the bar. It's meaningless, really - sort of like a secret handshake. See, you may address me as "OldLeftieLawyer, Esquire," but I've always been much more comfortable with a simple "Your Royal Highness," which made about as much sense in today's world as "Esquire."

I hope I cleared this up for you.

112. Thanks, Leftie.
Your explanation makes perfect sense. The old battle-ax (female) administrator who taught me all that stuff was a nitpicker to the nth degree, who insisted on absolute conformity in her charges, even down to insisting that we always staple documents on the diagonal so that the pages would lay over correctly as they were read. I guess right or wrong, she stuck with me. It was also an extremely conservative law firm, even by 1975 standards, with, of course, no female attorneys. I had to fetch coffee for my big, fat lazy boss who sat in his office smoking cigarettes all day, and call him "Mr." We couldn't wear pants of any sort (even here in Alaska where it used to be really cold in the winter and when we'd almost daily have to walk the four blocks to the courthouse) nor drink coffee at our desks. Thankfully, times have really changed.

114. Wow. Wow, Wow, Wow
You really were in the thick of it, weren't you, Blue?

In my limited experience back then - a young lawyer starting out on her own - the women who were the support staff (and, yes, they were all women) were bigger misogynists than the male lawyers. God forbid anyone of their gender dare to do better than they did.

I've heard that staple thing more than once, by the way, and, I hate to admit it, but it helps when you're reading a thick filing. Small, looks stupid, makes sense. Sort of like our dog.

There were lawyers who, when I'd call them, would start the conversation, even after I'd identified myself, by asking whose secretary I was. And there were secretaries who made sure my messages were never delivered.

But, there were also women who went out of their way to help me. I had to make the rent in the beginning, and doing real estate closings was a good way to earn small, reliable money. I didn't have the slightest idea of how to do it - there were no computerized records in those days, and title searches were done by hand - but a secretary in the largest real estate firm in town taught me everything one evening after she was off work.

She didn't have to do it, she was probably as old then as I am now, but, when I tried to pay her, she waved me off and said, "I'll do anything to help a woman get ahead in this business."

Times, indeed, have changed, Blue. I'm glad you're in a more interesting, less stressful job now, and thanks for the unexpected trip down memory lane.

I see you chose not to address me as "Your Royal Highness." My hunt goes on ..........

:)

...let's just say we BOTH paid our dues, that's for sure. But the law has been "berry, berry" good to me...has put food on my table for 30 years, and now that my little girl is a fancy schmancy lawyer working in one of the most prestigious law firms in California, my old age will be secure, as well, when my old, arthritic fingers can no longer pound the keyboard. You can bet I won't let her forget her humble beginnings and who was here cheering her on all the way. ;)

40. Kinda neutral but leaning toward male
I'm a guy but I don't have much invested in it - gender has always seemed more like a game than reality. Like playing chess with your genitals ...

I guess Blur summed up the gender game for me:

"Girls who want boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they're girls who do girls like they're boys"

Khash.

But after 17 years online, it does help to have a neutral alias.

77. A Supernova isn't a female?!
When did that happen?!

Seriously, the only boards I ever spend a LOT of time on before DU were the AOL boards in the beginning. I had a girlie screenname then (can't even remember what it was) and litterally got bogged down with IMs. I couldn't even post sometimes.

So when I joined DU, I remembered that and picked a neutral name. However, knowing all of you and that you are soooo goooood to flirt with, I'd change my name to a more girlie one if we ever have another name change amnesty.

78. No...but sometimes the Dr part causes gender assumptions (not at DU...
...of course) but in the real world. If I use my DR when making reservations over internet, those on the other end assume I'm a MR... and... sometimes that is reflected in better service. Go figure.

Here... my DR just gets me lotsa guff. Ha ha ha.

116. There are women who spell their name "Terry"
The actress who used to be on "Becker", Terry Farrell, spelled her first name with an "rry"

"Terry" is a most androgynous name. I'm male, but I respect each gender equally.
