Someone stole my credit card and charged $2,000+
I think it was a cleaning lady I hired off of craigslist, but I can't be sure. I think the last place I had the card was on my dresser and she's the only person who has been in the house besides us. I was very nice to her - it kind of sucks that she might have done this to me. I guess it's up to the c card company to unravel. They already said I just need to sign an affidavit saying I didn't make the charges and then I'm not responsible.

I'm so surprised this happened to me. I guess I shouldn't be, but I am.

3. Dig a little deeper -- make sure it wasn't your identity, as well.
Sorry to hear that happened.

4. I had my checkbook stolen 6 months ago
and last time I checked with the bank, $100,000 in checks had been written. I asked the lady to repeat it, I thought I heard her wrong.

9. Wow!
Nice haul. Who ARE these people who do this? Junkies alone can't account for all this. Tony Soprano maybe?

11. Mine was stolen from my house by a friend of a friend
of my son's. He was dumb enough to write a check to himself so he got caught. The cops said he sold the checkbook to a drug dealer.

The lady at my bank who took my report told me the kid who lives across the street from her stole her debit card and used it to order a stereo and had it delivered to his house.

12. Mom? Is that you?
While I'm pretty sure you're not my mother, the same thing happened to my family a few years back, and then to me.

14. Oh, shit! You really ARE my mom!
Look, I know you were coming out to visit in a few days, and I've had everything ready but the dishes, I swear. Clean sheets, vacuumed floors, scrubbed toilets...I even put kitty litter on the oil stain in my garage and taught your ganddaughter how to mop.

I was going to do the dishes in the morning, I swear.

6. Yes, it sucks. I had mine stolen in December
From my desk at work. They immediately charged them up. I wasn't responsible for the charges and neither the credit card company or my work seemed very interested in findng the thief.

7. I had mine "skimmed" at a gas station.
It was a national chain too. The cops cancelled my card before it had been used.

8. Different situation, similar result . . .
My pocket was picked on the train between Naples and Pompeii last year, which I discovered within minutes of it happening. I got to a phone within 2 hours to begin cancelling the cards (3) I was carrying.

In that 2 hours, the thieves had run up over $10,000 on the cards. Expensive electronics, leather goods (obviously purchased from a willing confederate at some fancy stores) and $4000 for phone calls that I'm still puzzling over (as in, how'd they run up a $4000 phone bill in just 2 hours?).

Dealing with the card companies was a pain (I had to submit the same paperwork to one company three times because they couldn't find it), but not an agony. And I wasn't made responsible for the charges.

Not that I'm feeling especially sorry for the card companies -- they make it all back plus plus in the rates they charge.

I cancelled all my ID with the appropriate authorities and now look very closely at my bills and check my credit rating every two months or so, to see if there are any follow-on effects.

10. This is trhe typical reaction of a crime
if need be talk to the cops, they can direct you to groups...

Also if it was the cleaning lady, the cops should be arresting her... since you know who it was.. but yuo need to be 1000 sure that it was her.

17. well, I paid her much more than she asked for
I wanted her to know that she was worth more money than she was asking. Turns out she knew she was going to be giving herself a hefty raise. :)

Honestly, I can't be sure it was her.
