Bush politicized the pope
As a Catholic, I take offense at Pres. Bush politicizing the death of Pope John Paul II. After his death, both Pres. Bush and his press secretary, Scott McClellan, stated that Pope John Paul II and the president shared a "culture of life" ideology. However, Bush and McClellan fail to recognize the fact the Holy Father opposed the death penalty, something the president ardently supports
The fact is, the president and the Holy Father shared views on only a few issues. When the United States invaded Iraq, the Holy Father showed strong opposition to the war, calling it illegal, immoral and unjust. He also condemned the actions at Abu Ghraib Prison.
The Holy Father preached peace, Pres. Bush supported war. The Holy Father preached welfare and health care for all, Pres. Bush supported health care and welfare cuts.
I hope the White House doesn't diminish the legacy of the Holy Father for political gain.
