Was there a radio DJ who you always tuned in when you were a kid?
Someone you really identified with? Like Wolfman Jack in "American Graffiti"?

In the Twin Cities we had Rob Sherwood. Cool guy, very nice to his fans. He worked at each of the local top 40 rock stations over the years. Came to speak to our 9th grade class once, and it was then I decided to go into radio.

Any DJs like that in your world?

2. Not a DJ...
Someone much, much more:

Jean Shepard. Never missed him when I was a kid.

When I got older and into music, I moved onto the WNEW-FM jocks.

But Shep? He was head and shoulders above all others. A real American classic.

3. I remember Shep.
One of the greatest storytellers in radio.

Needless to say I couldn't hear him in MN, but heard some air checks many years later. What a great style.

6. We had "The True Don Bleu"
I felt cheated when I learned he had ripped off "The Real Don Steele".

He actually worked out of Minneapolis for a time in the 60s before he popularized his Wolfman persona out on the west coast.

9. Andy O'Reilly
He was hilarious.

Also Daisy May, whom we all pictured as totally smokin' hot, and she was, too.

Now that we're older and really only listen to the radio in the morning, we listen to Free Beer and Hot Wings. classic.

10. WABC in New York City
Cousin Brucie.

He ruled.

I heard him screaming about some song on the AM dial, and then he played "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zep.

Changed my freakin' life.

11. Larry Lujack in Chicago
He was a "shock jock" back in the sixties. Of course now his show would be tame.

13. I listened to all kinds of them. I was fascinated by the radio.
I guess that's why I went into it. I was finally encouraged to go to radio school in my early 20s by a friend of mine who was in Twin Cities radio - Mindy Collins of KQRS.
