9. Wow I didn't know Opryland closed down...
I'll always remember the line from the Tinman in the musical The Wiz, something like, "There's nothing amusing about the closing down of an amusement park." I thought of that quote several times today myself.

What a waste. It was a fab amusement park.

Edit: Closed in 1997, per this article http://www.wkrn.com/Global/story.asp?S=3087523 .

71. I used to work there - between my junior and senior years of high school

I loved that job. I moved to Florida the next year, though.

I was disappointed when I heard they shut it down. It was a good park.

12. Staying home on Saturday nights has been an unfortunate habit of mine
As for amusement parks, the only Bush Gardens I've been to was the one in Tampa, long time ago. There were a couple of Looping coasters there that were considered "high Tech" for there day. Mind you, this was back in the early 80's.

10. Hi, Longgrain,
1. I'm here late Saturday afternoon (CA time) because I WANT to be! No chores for awhile yet. Dinner and news later. We never go out on a Saturday night, lol!
2.I'm listening to my FAVORITE radio station, a non-commercial classical one, KUSC, here in LA...
3.Favorite amusement park? I guess it would be Disneyland, but haven't been there in years...It's too expensive and too crowded these days, plus my girls are all grown up.

So how's that?

:bounce:

28. In high school the rides were operated by friends of mine.
We'd jump the fence by the lake and ride and eat for free. My brother ran the air hockey center.
The roller rink would play hard rock music and all of us little stoners would get wasted and skate for hours for free.
I was there 2 years ago, brought my son, and we had a great time.

Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 07:42 PM by CottonBear
1) I'm here because I'm spending the evening with my beautiful 16 year old stepdaughter (who is here for the weekend), I'm teaching her to drive stickshift (she did great driving my big Dodge 4WD truck!) I took a day off from horse farm work (my first day off in two weeks.)

2)I'm watching the Braves (Brian Jordan grand slam HR!), about to go out to buy Sunday beer (it's the south: no beer, wine or liquor sales on Sunday, so stock up on Saturday night!) and cokes before settling in for the evening and eating the wonderful meal that Mr. CotttonBear has prepared. We will then watch Britcoms before retiring to bed.

3) My favorite amusement park is Lake Winnepesauka (sp?) near Chattanooga, TN (a vintage 1920s era park complete with wooden roller coasters and a wooden boat tunnel of love ride and a big lake with huge Koi and those little paddle wheel boats that you can rent.) We went there as children in the late 60s and early 70s.

edit: Braves leading the Mets in the bottom of the 5th.

22. I'm dipping in DU every now and then to take a break from the
answer to question two.

I'm programming my portfolio website, so that I may earn lots of cash in the relatively near future.

Action Park, New Jersey. Lots of water rides, which is a nice change from all the dryness and sunburning of most Six Flags places. Universal Studios is also nice, but Action Park still takes the cake. Assuming it's still around.

27. Why I am here on a Saturday night
I was gone for a week and have tried to get a little caught up on DU news and events before I have to leave again for another four days. While I was away Jeff Matson - nostamj - passed away and I just found out earlier today.

You little shits mean a lot to me so everybody -- take care of yourselves and you better be here when I get back.

I'm multi-tasking a little. Trying to wrap up edits on an article that's due.

I don't really like amusement parks because rides make me sick but I enjoyed Disney World when I first went when I was about 15. I took my daughter a couple years ago. It's never as good as the first time.

35. I'll answer.
1) I was hanging out with a friend all day and he just left a while ago. I'm extremely addicted to DU, so whenever I have a few minutes I "take a peek" before doing what I have to do. That "peek" usually lasts several hours and nothing gets done.

2) Listening to some online radio, KNAC.com. The only radio I enjoy is on now, a show called "The Wild Side," which plays hard rock from the late '80s/early '90s (ie "hair bands").

3) I don't like amusement parks; I get motion sickness on the rides. I used to like Paragon Park at Nantasket Beach in Mass. (The park is long gone, but I think someone bought its rollercoaster.)

3. I used to go to Lincoln Park in Fall River when a kid (loooong gone now) and would continuously ride the rickety roller coaster until closing time...and the round up. Great fun! Hated the fun house tho because it had those air blasters that would hit your legs when you walked by. I remember freaking out and made them shut it off and I went back the way I came in, lol! BUT the best roller coaster ride I had was on The Beast, at a park in Cincinnati, OH...don't remember the name of the park tho..it was back in the '80s. Ahhh, those were the days!

2) Well, I was having another fruitless attempt at conversing with my now-ex lover, but I'm done now.

Public Service Announcement: just because the planet is doomed for real now, doesn't mean you get to treat people who care about you like shit. Can I get a witness?

54. Introduction
Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 09:53 PM by Pockets
Why am I here? Well this is my first post to the DU.

I am putting an end to a dark period in my life, the past year, which was spent posting over 1,000 messages on Hannity. I spent about a year trying to fight neocon stupidity, but finally determined, once and for all, I was helping their cause with my clarifying statements, rather than turning them in the right direction, so I might as well start posting here.

Favorite amusement park: Six Flags.

59. OK
1) Why are you here on a Saturday night/ evening?

I didn't make any plans because I had to take care of my children and their dad was gone until a couple of hours ago.

2) Are you doing something else besides posting on DU right now?

Just listening to music.

3) What's your favorite amusement park?

It's now gone, far away, and only in my memory- Peony Park in Omaha, NE. One of few positive childhood memories.

60. I hate going out at night
because I have some night blindness. Besides, I've been out all day.

Right now, I'm doing nothing but waiting for my sleepy-time pills to kick into action so I can go to sleep. I was watching TV, but nothing on right now that I care to watch.

Favorite amusement park USED to be Paragon Park (for Massachusettsites, you'll know the one I'm talking about), then it was Rocky Point in Rhode Island (is it still there?) and then it became Disneyland solely because I worked at Universal, and after awhile Universal got to be a bore.

There are my answers. :)

63. Three Answers from Hatalles
1. I'm not much of a socialite.

2. I have Yahoo! Game Channel open -- keeping tabs on the Dodgers/Diamondbacks game. J.D. Drew and Jeff Kent are on my fantasy squad.

3. I'd go with Disneyland -- Most people prefer Great America (and it is closer, just over in the San Jose area) but I like the 'family' atmosphere of Disneyland a lot better than the teen/spring-break feel over at Great America.

65. Here you go:
1) Why are you here on a Saturday night/ evening?

My soon to be 8 year old (Material Girl) is sick and has been for three days.

2) Are you doing something else besides posting on DU right now?

Just cleaned out a vomit bowl, sitting here now listening to Bob Marley wishing for a big old spleef of my own. I AM about ready to start drinking dark rum with a bunch of tropical juices in it, however.

3) What's your favorite amusement park?

I suppose naming a bar would be bad form. I guess I'll just say that amusement parks are not a part of my world, given the fact that my husband and daughter don't care for them.

Cheers!

Laura

68. Hello!
1. Nothing else to do on Saturday nights and I love DU.
2. Nothing, but I wouldn't mind listening to some Captain Beefheart now.
3. Don't like theme parks, so expensive. I like rides at the Rockland (Maine) Lobster Festival. Go on the Ferris Wheel you can see Rockland's Harbor and Breakwater and it is stunning!

74. 1) I usually am here right about now
2) I've been analyzing budget 'pork.' Last year, the state of Alabama got nearly $600,000 of your and my tax dollars earmarked toward peanut research. Here's an idea: grow the peanuts, sell the peanuts, save money, and research the peanuts with your own money, instead of having to ask the federal government for the money!

3) Michigan's Adventure

76. Answers
1. I'm stuck at work and DU is the only thing keeping me awake right now.

2. I'm listening to an array of CDs and critiquing my radio audition CD as well.

3. Walt Disney World. I can't even explain why I love it so much. I guess because, no matter what age, when you go there, you can be a kid again.
