Name the best PC-based games out right now.
Preferably fairly violent and/or scary. Not too easy to figure out.

(And not Half-Life or Half-Life 2 or Halo.)

Something involving guns, blood, heads rolling, you know, that kind of stuff. Mystery. Weirdness.

I have already had Doom recommended. (Doom 3? Is that the newest?)

What else?

1. Doom 3.
Oh, I see now that you said that has already been recommended. Consider is seconded.

2. Ok good, that just helps the decision along.
Have you played it? How is it?

3. I've played it on PC a couple times
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 05:41 PM by Worst Username Ever
and just ordered the Xbox version on Thursday, it should be here this week. I really really like first person shooter games, and this one is a good one. Many would classify it as "Run and Gun," meaning it is loose on plot and heavy on just running around and shooting things. But that is fine, I like that! Best played in the dark, you'll jump.

Depending on your PC power, I have a huge number of FPS shooter games to recommend for you. Anything Wolfenstien, anything Medal of Honor. Also, although a bit old school, I really like the Serious Sam series (also considered run and gun... LOTS OF SHOOTING!).

7. Oh, and RE Halo 2:
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 05:46 PM by Worst Username Ever
Playing Halo 2 on-line against my friends is pretty much my favorite gaming activity, but you took it out of the running! That is the only reason I am not nominating it!

12. You're cracking me up.
"The Liger: it's pretty much my favorite animal."

"It's pretty much my favorite gaming activity."

Do you have bo staff skills?

LOL!

Halo 2, huh? I know he had Halo, but not for the PC, for whatever gaming system he used to have.

I'm gonna drop hints tonight and see what he says about Halo 2 or Doom 3. I know nothing about this stuff, so I thank all of you on this thread for your help!! :toast:

17. He'll need xbox for Halo 2
I don't think it is on PC yet (it might tbe, I'm not sure). Stick with Doom 3.

You know, there's like a butt-load of gangs at this school. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bo staff.

4. Pirates
Not scary or violent. But I have found it an enjoyable game with many facets. It is not a shooter game.

5. Doom 3 is decent
It's okay, but it isn't as great as it probably should have been. It's beautiful, the game play is above par. Of course, like HL2, you'll need a PC powerful enough to handle it.

I dunno, since HL2 and Halo are out of the running, I'm kinda at a loss.:P

Bottom line - if you/he/whatever likes shooters, you'll like doom 3.

8. Ok, I think I've pretty much decided on Doom 3.
He's addicted to the one-person shooter games, especially ones that could possibly make you jump. He definitely has the PC power for it.

Thanks! :hi:

13. Doom 3 will make you jump.
Much of the game requires you to switch back and forth between your flashlight and your gun - which complicates things, but also makes the game more challenging and exciting.

:hi:

6. I tried the demo for The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay...
...and it was very, very well done.
The demo has some stealth areas, some areas where you have cool gunfights, and even meele combat. It's received fairly good ratings, and the PC version is apparently a "Developer's Cut". I'm assuming there's more stuff in this version, as compared to the XBox version.

If you can stand Vin Diesel and the universe (For some reason, I enjoyed "The Chronicles of Riddick" and I can easily tolerate Mr. Diesel...he's a fellow D&D player) and if your computer already runs Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, it should run fine.

(I'll let you know how the full game is later: I just bought it today...along with Garbage's new CD)

11. HL2 is IMHO the best PC FPS ever made ...
That being said, check out "Painkiller"

Oh, and both the Max Paynes are worth a look for a very "film noire" atmosphere ... but they are 3PS.

Hmmm ... another recommendation is Soldier of Fortune 2 ... mainly for it's "I just shot your head off with the shottie, look at your blood spraying all over the wall" kinda action.

16. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be released in a couple of months
for the PC, although it might be too late for you.

It has a violent and excellent storyline, an awesome soundtrack and not too-easy to figure out.

Imagine a huge city where you do whatever you want: bank robberies, missions for the mafia, shoot pool in a bar, go to the gym, eat and get fat, date women, gamble in casinos, purchase property and businesses, start gang wars, grab a car, bike, plane, helicopter or rocket jet pack and create havoc and this is on top of the main story. I played the PS2 version and it's hugely entertaining and engrossing.

Have you ever watched Futurama (from the same creator of the Simpsons)? My avatar is Lord Nibbler Ambassador to Earth (Home of the pizza bagel) to give his full title.

I don't have three eyes and a pair of fangs though. It amuses me that when someone sees "Anarcho-Socialist", they're picturing a little weird alien with three eyes and fangs. :) I do think amongst similar lines sometimes when I see other DUers' avatars; and as such the image of them I hold is of their avatar.

20. Far Cry and The Punisher
Far Cry is an awesome, awesome FPS. The graphics are just...incredible.

The Punisher is almost as bloodletting as Postal, only there is some plot.

24. I've almost finished the game. However,
when I upgrade my video card, I'm playing again. I've got a pretty good rig (no Alienware, but it's good) and I can't run at full bore.

25. Another vote for Far Cry...
beautiful graphics, intersting storyline, very creepy monsters, and non-linear gameplay (you don't have to follow a certain path through each level to complete your goals). I still can't decide if I like Far Cry or Half Life 2 better.
