They're mean and viscious, they live to hate,

Belittling everything others do,

While others post just to be heard,
The trolls are being paid.

No board could do without 'em,
They stifle freedom of speech with ease,

Trolling is a time honoured sport! It takes skill, intelligence, and a hunter's instincts to do it well. Ya can't just say something outrageous - you have to craft a skillfull and well reasoned argument to trap your prey. Lull them in, and spring the logic gates behind them.

Nasty but fun. I once trolled an author I very much admire. He actually dedicated a book to me calling me a "fucking reptile".

Small fame but well earned.

I actually prefer progress to sport. And if we're discussing a real issue I'll be perfectly upfront and honest. Maybe sometimes too honest.

But if we're just chitchatting and having fun, I'll mess around a bit. As I did in my previous post. In a sense it was a troll - everything I said was true but the emphasis was off. It was a joke - I overstated everything just enough, I thought, to make it rather silly, while still somewhat plausible.

Some people think it is all about winning. They think putting others down raises them up. No matter how sophisticated and crafty their writing, you can recognize them by their ad hominem attacks and the clubs in their gnarly little hands.

Others think it is all about helping and uplifting. They'll bend over backwards to give others a boost. Some call them losers, some call them team players, and I call them progressives. You can always reconize them because they place themselves between the loggers and the trees, between the sealers and the baby seals, and between the activists and the police clubs.

but us seniors are rarely cool. I was just venting. But I do listen to pirate radio, so I've heard some really cool stuff--most of it by people at least 40 or more years my junior in age, and thousands of years my elder in progressivism.
