2. Corporatism and the "bling bling" crap took over
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 09:47 PM by TroubleMan
I've been listening to rap for over 20 years now, and I always though the early to mid 90's were the mecca of rap. Digable Planets was one of those groups that rode the crest of hip-hop's creativity back then. They were unique and didn't sound like anybody else. It's hard to say that now about a lot of rap groups.

To me, with a few exceptions (like Mos Def and Talib Kweli), it's gone way downhill. It went from a gourmet restaurant to McDonalds, packaged and produced for mass conception. A lot more people eat at McDonalds than a gourmet restaurant, but the food is crappy. The food is also bad for you (just like "bling bling" materialism).

9. I'm familiar with all those

except for Herbalizer.

There are still several groups I still like. I got almost all of the Roots cd's, a lot of old Guru tapes (Jazzmatazz and when he was with DJ Premiere in Gangstarr), and I got a few from Common, too.

I just didn't feel like listing a lot....LOL....laziness.

4. That's why I loved them.
They were unique, creative and positive.
Who else from that period do you like? I'm always looking.

10. From that period:
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 10:39 PM by TroubleMan
Gangstarr, Blahzay Blahzay, Channel Live, Black Moon, Lords Of The Underground, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, Poor Righteous Teachers...I could go on and on.

Of course some of the long time rappers made some great albums then:

KRS One made Return of The Boom Bap
Ice Cube had Death Certificate and Amerikkka's Most Wanted
Eric B & Rakim made Don't Sweat The Technique
Wu-Tang's first album came out around then.

Man, there was some good music back then.

(on edit)

I forgot that Biggie's first ablum came out around then....
The Fugees made The Score
Tupac's best album IMHO, Me Against The World, came out then, too.
and Nas made Illmatic.
