Swearing
So who swears more, guys or women? And regardless of your own gender, do you find it worse to hear a woman swearing or a man? Does your estimation of a woman in particular go down if she swears a lot? Do you tend to give guys more slack when they swear? Do you find it more offensive to hearing a young person (under 20) swearing or someone over, let's say, 50? Do you swear a lot yourself?

Do you think swearing for the most part is okay? And if you do, what words do you feel no one should say just because they're so vulgar? What do you think of made-up substitute swears? Do you feel those who do swear should just use the regular ones and get it over with?

Years ago, George Carlin did a monoligue on the swear words you would never hear on TV. Since those days, many of the bans have been lifted and now there are very few words that Standards and Practices have to censor (I can think of only three) on regular TV. Is this good, as long as swears can only be on premier cable stations?

1. I think it depends on the skill of the speaker and not --
-- whether it's a man or woman.

My Aunt Leila could turn the air blue around ya. She had a blistering command of raw language and you'd pity the fool who tried to cross her at the grocery store checkout line.

My grandfather on one side had a tin ear for dialogue and the rhythm of speech, and he stumbled over just about anything, including the coarse language.

But my other grandfather was a master. I listened to my elders with their varying levels of skill swear from an early age. Instinctively -- even if I didn't know the meanings of every single coarse reference -- I knew which words and phrases could be repeated at the supper table and which ones could not.

So skill not sex or gender is my take.

...But what you don't know is that I can also swear in Spanish, which I truly love! Me cago en tu puta madre cabron!!!! Nothing in the English language quite compares to that.
