According to this site: http://www.hamrick.com/names/ (distribution of surnames in the US by frequency among the population), my surname is not very common (from one in 2500 to one in 10,000, depending on the state).

Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 10:01 PM by yvr girl
An alternate spelling did appear, but it wasn't common. 1 in 1000 to 1 in 10,000

My mom's maiden name wasn't in the database either.

Here on the west coast, my family name is fairly obscure. My town has three listings for my last name (there should be at least two more but my family's unlisted.) Different patterns of immigration, I guess.

39. Technically, my family emigrated to Canada
It's not a common name with either spelling. I've only met one family with my last name that wasn't related to me.

I don't know how common my mom's maiden name is, but I've never met a non-relative who had it.

40. Yeah...
I assumed your family emigrated to Canada, but I just assumed the variant spelling would've come about after English colonisation of what's now the US eastern seaboard and before they emigrated.

46. That explains it, then...
those who emigrated before the 1800's tended to live near coasts, and since a lot of early immigrants were illiterate, their surnames got altered (sometimes unrecognisably)...

more surnames in use worldwide than there are unique surnames in NYC (or the USA, for that matter)...
