What is it with modern day pop stars butchering classic songs? |
|
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 01:11 AM by coloradodem2005
Hillary Duff sings "My Generation" and changes one line to "I hope I don't die before I get old." Limp (dick) Bizkit covers The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" and Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and even adds an extra verse to the latter song and does away with the guitar solo from the former. Brittany Spears totally butchers The Stones' "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction". Korn butchers Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall". Ok, so some believe that when the Korn guitarist found God that God got angry because Korn had the nerve to touch Floyd. God, please take all these other idiots with you. Make them stop. They are destroying music. I can scarcely think of that many bands that I like after the mid to late 90's thanks to these idiots taking up all of the attention of the masses. The lowest common denominator in action.

2. It's seems like cover tunes are all the rage now |
|
Bands are actually trying to make it to the big show on the backs of other artists. But you know they aren't all to blame. I think to commercially release a cover tune you have to cut a deal with the original artist. That means that all those classic rockers are equally to blame for letting someone else do their song. And kill it.

3. Is it the artists or sometimes their record labels? |
|
The labels seem to be the real perps in this.

5. Well I guess it's whoever owns the rights to the songs |
|
so it could very well be the record labels. I hadn't thought that those classic artists may not own their songs.

13. I could be wrong, but . . . |
|
. . . I think any group can record and/or perform any song, as long as the proper royalties are paid to the writer(s) and publisher.

4. Bad covers are not a new innovation |
|
Quite frankly people have been doing crappy covers since the emergence of pop/rock in the 1950's.

6. Cover tunes, remakes of old movies that did not need remaking in the first |
|
place...just symptoms of the fact that our creativity as a society has been sucked out of us by ubermarketing.

7. I can't believe people actually by this stuff. |

There are a few truly decent covers. But when you edit or add your own crap to it,no thanks.

9. Lenny Kravitz completely ruined "American Woman"... |
|
...with his bland, anemic cover version. And of course his version has none of the political context of the original...

12. Can he even sing a song that has more than 10 lyrics? |
|
That's probably why this cover sucks, he got lost trying to remember all the lyrics.
Seriously, "I wanna get away, I wanna fly away, yeah, yeah, yeah" THAT'S THE WHOLE DAMN SONG. And you can't forget "She's a super lady, she's a special lady." WOW, Lenny, you're really FLEXING those lyric-writing muscles aren't ya?
